Is there an obvious reason why I am being quoted so much ??
Hi folks,
I have a 2004 WRX ( UK model ) which is standard apart from a performance back box. In the next couple of months I am intending fitting some 18" alloys. My current insurance is due for renewal and my premium came through from Privilege at a very reasonable £568. As soon as I mentioned that I was planning to change the alloys the cost shot up to £800 !!!! So I thought I would try a specialist. The cheapest so far is Adrian Flux at £722 but that still seems a lot. My details are:
34 yr old, full clean licence for 17 yrs, 10 yrs NCB, the car is kept garaged, has a Trakker and is only used socially at weekends ( less than 5000 miles a year ) as I have another car for daily use. I work for an emergency service ( Fire and Rescue ). I've owned the car for over 12 months and have a history of performance cars, the only mods are those listed above. I have a M29 postcode ( which actually stopped Sky Insurance from quoting me even though I live miles away from Manchester !!!! ) but apart from that I can't see what is making my premium so expensive.
Can anyone spot what is 'wrong' with me ??
Currently waiting for a call back from A-Plan and Keith Michaels - but who else is worth trying ?

Academy Insurance These beat everyone else when i insured mine, just play them off against each other, maybe lowering your previous best quote by £30 everytime saved me £300.

i was with adrain flux for 5 years when until i was 25, rang them up and told them i was interested in getting an impreza and they said they could do it for less than £1000. id seen in a car mag about someone with a modded scoob getting quotes, they got it for about £900 i think. so i got the car a week later. rang them back and they said it would be £1450. at every renewal i had before there was an a4 page with big letters saying theyd beat any other quote , so i got another quote forr £1100. rang them back and they said they wouldnt go lower than £1450. PRIX!!!! when i mentioned i was thinkin about modifying it with a stainless exhaust and a dump valve they said it would be £2800!!!! ive had a modded car withthem before and it had made no difference to the cost?? anyway i went to the other place and got it for £1100.

Just had renewal quote through recently for 1700. Had a quick quote from greenlight for 650quid but reckon i'l get it cheaper usin the companies mentioned on this site(which I didn't know about last yr). Oh, an mines an 03 bugeye wrx wi ppp, 6000miles a yr, garaged.

Aye, our Gazza's a star. Got my 205 GTi insured through him for £470 fully comp. Not bad with only 2 years ncb, 3 points and 2 non fault accidents
If it's not £0.50 come renewal time in December, I'm fookin' off

To those in the know: is this postcode weighting just based on theft risk?
If so, why does a third-party-only quote tend to be 50p cheaper than third-party, fire & theft cover? Whenever I've checked whether driveway/garage makes a difference, having it garaged is no cheaper either, yet surely it cuts the theft risk hugely.
I know insurers claim to base their premiums on statistics but these examples seem to defy logic and so does not suppor that claim. Surely an insurer that did a proper analysis on these things and charged accordingly would do good business (in terms of their sales and accurate prediction of risk).
It seems to me the industry is set up for ease of data entry. The specialists are sometimes an exception and seem to have some common sense when it comes to assessing the risk of an individual. Sorry for the hijack, it's just something that irritates me and the thread starter's situation reminded me of it!

And currently the BIG aspect on rating areas is personal injury.
Certain areas in the UK have a massive problem with people claiming for personal injury, and insurers don't want to touch anyone in those areas.
