What is it with insurance companies - is there no consistency at all

Ok, me 26, 7 years protected no claims, berkshire postcode, 1 non fault claim, car on drive, MY99 UK Turbo saloon with 17s, replacement air filter and front discs/pads, eibachs, full zorst.......

Out of 17 insurance companies, 9 wouldn't quote or weren't competitive. 3 were over a grand, 4 were around 900 and the other was insurers of mine from a few years ago -

Chris Knott. Came in with £777 protected with £350 excess.

The other companies were:

Elephant - 1730
Direct Line - 906
Tesco - 865
Greenlight - 900 (couldn't get a UK Turbo insured any less than that even though Scott W with an almost identical car, 1 year older than me and 3 years less no claims was 750ish )
Liverpool Victoria - N/A
Frizzel - N/A
Allen & Allen (recommended by Bell Direct) - N/A
Admiral - N/A
Norwich Union Direct - N/A
Privilege - 1100
Hastings Direct - N/A
Abbey National - N/A
Quoteline Direct - 1059
Insure Direct - N/A
Performance Direct - 850ish
Adrian Flux (my renewal) - 885 (with breakdown) 867 (without) although they guarantee to beat any other quote I'm given
Chris Knott - 777 and a VERY VERY nice chap on the phone

Can't believe its been so difficult and was very suprised the likes of Greenlight took the Pi$$

Rant over - hope that list helps others of you out there, just off to phone Adrian Flux to see what they'll beat Chris Knott with.........

Forgot to say the car has a CAT 1 alarm and Navtrak Proactive.

Phoned Flux, they offered me exactly the same policy as I've got this year for 745 and 400 excess. Last year was 730 and then about 50 quid (perhaps a little more on mods over the year) so I suppose that actually makes it a bit cheaper than last year
I've had a few problems with them, though, but a letter usually sorts......

So - Chris Knott or Flux??????

Question

I'd crossed Chris Knott off my list to phone as someone said in another thread that they wouldn't deal with modded cars. If that's wrong then I'll put them back on the list and call tomorrow.

Completely sympathetic with you though, UK MY99 turbo, ITG, SS b/box, uprated discs/pads/hoses, quickshift, clear indicators, full no claims protected, me & the wife to drive (29/26), reasonable postcode, garaged & suitably protected:

50% wouldn't quote, most were too high
only Greenlight, Bell Direct and Direct Line (current) are reasonable at around 920 - 960 quid.

Couldn't even get a quote from Tesco as all their PC's seem to be broke!!

Funny old game, innit?

Simon

Chris Knott are on 01580 752961 / 0800 917 2274

I think I'll stay with Flux (begrudgingly) simply coz its easier and less paperwork, plus they are already aware of the mods on the car and I wouldn't have to sort that all out again!!

Cheers
Neil.

Thumbs down

Wait till you get a post My01 car. Pre My01 is group 17, post is Grp 19.

I'm 30 7 yrs ncb, no claims - 1 speeding conviction on motorway, Wilts post code,+ wife to drive(which actually made it cheaper)
+ Scooby back box.

Best quote was £798 wiith Bell, which actually went up to 832 when I asked to take the policy(They have honoured the £798 though).

Flux, Knott, Greenlight, Privelige were way out, quoting 900-1200. Best was Tesco at £694 requiring tracker. Tried agsain month later £722 not requiring tracker(what's that all about?). Rang up to snap their hand off and add SS BB, went up to £898!!!

Rant over

Edited to say - Bell excess is £150

Talking

If you speak to Rum about this, you'll know how changable insurance can be. I've been asking for quotes on my MY01, lightly modified (Scoobysport exhaust, Eibachs, Rallytech rear wing) and I've been getting a huge variation - all over £1000 (Me:30, FNCB, 3pts speeding, Herts postcode). Anyway, spoke to Greenlight and they came in miles better than anyone else :£831 - they get my vote
