wrighty, if you can, wait until your 21 as then i believe www.ecarinsurance.co.uk may be able to help you.
i was in a situation in dec 06, when i was 22. i was looking at a uk scoob (which i eventually bought) but was really struggling for insurance, bit like nathan above, but with no ncb and less than a year on my licence
everyone wanted £3000-3500 and on a uk 99 car i wasnt prepared to pay that having a mortgage etc.
ecar came up trumps big time - £1750 fully comp. so i was 22 with a group 17 car (not an import - group 20) and no ncb, little experience.
i believe and you should be able to check this, that ecar insure over 21s on group 17 and lower cars.
very good prices as they are internet only providers, ie no phone calls etc. this isnt a hinderance either. some **** crashed into me and ecar couldnt have been more helpful, so you can use them claim wise too.
again as nathan said above.... DELCARE ALL MODS, its not worth the risk not too, as your insurance is void without and crash assessors are getting more clued up. i bricked it last year when i was questioned over 2 300mm scoobybits stickers for gods sake
good luck and let me know what ecar say if you try them...
