Unhappy INSURANCE

hi folks just new to the site. Im thinking off buyin a impreza wrx sti version 3 wagon and been tryin to get quotes for insurance. im 23 and will be a named driver on my mum's policy but the all the quotes so far have been comin back at £1600 which i think is very expensive. Not sure if this is because its an import. i thought maybe 600-700 for insurance would be resonable. maybe i need to look at other cars If anyone knows off any insurance companys that may be able to help, please let me know, thanks

Maybe your mother should consider leaving you off the policy for cheaper insurance?

Tisk this is very trollish but i am laughing!

Sorry 23 year old on that car, I don't want to shatter any dreams but £1600 is borderline reasonable... I was 23 a few years back and I was paying at least that for less exotic cars. Insurance - forever painful and just when you get old enough for it to be cheap, you become too old and it starts going up again!

Are you suggesting the original poster is intending to buy a car and fraudelently name his mother as main driver while hooning around town in his Impreza with stickers all over it and a stupidly loud exhaust?

Wouldn't that be

a>illegal

b> extremely stupid to ask advice about on a public forum that could be used as evidence against him in a court of law?

I hope not, I was going to suggest he bought himself a 1.0ltr Fiesta and leave the Impreza to a more experienced driver while he built up his NCB and did some more driving.

Nar who would do that, most insurers want the main driver to be the owner, aka the person on the V5 so just think every time you were stopped by the Fuzz you would have to answer the infamus "Is this your car sunny?" with "No officer, its my mum's" and then hide under the dash with embarrassment.

I am no expert, but I am pretty sure that it is illegal to put your mother as the principle policy holder then you as named driver.

Of course, nothing wrong with your mother owning the car.

Try Keith Michaels or A-Plan. Mainstream insurers won't be interested.

Yet again, these infractions are nonsense.

It IS illegal to buy the car, get your Mum to act as the principal driver to get the insurance and then probably never let her get behind the wheel. And if you have a shunt, the insurers will pretty soon find out you have been passing off and you'll have no insurance, no car, as well as a large fine and 6 penalty points - and quite possibly so will your Mum.

The fact is these are high performance cars which should be in the hands of responsible drivers - cars kill [as do a lot of other things but if the car were invented today the Health and Safety people would have had it banned!!]

The correct way to go about this is to put your Mum on the policy as a named driver with you, the owner as the policy holder - but you may well be looking at £2.5K or more with a huge excess.

My advice, as others, is wait a bit, drive something sensible until you are 25, be careful so you build up your NCB, save up your money and buy something really good.

In the meantime take yourself off on a couple of hi-performance days each year to have some fun and so you will know how to handle the power - and the responsibility - so you don't wreck your lovely new motor on day 1.

Spot on!

The rest is sound advice too. If you want a Scooby and you're under 25 with no/minimal NCB, expect to pay through the nose.

May be worth giving Gary at Kieth Michaels a ring, but whomever you ask, the quote will not be cheap, certainly not 6-800 quid.

Sorry!

im testiment to that. i was impatient and have owned scoobs since passing my test. i was and still am quite prepared to sacrifice other things to cough up for the insurance.

for the record, thgis year ive been paying £1750. thats a 22 year old, no ncb, on a standardish uk turbo 2000 worth around £4-4.5k

with two non fault claims, and 1 years ncb, its now gone down too £1254 fully comp, and im not 23. im about to renew this weekend.

you will struggle to get reasonable quotes, even if you buy a stock turbo 2000 which is gruop 17.

if your prepared to pay the insurance, all good and well, but by naming the main driver as mummy, you will get nothing but (deserved) hassle on here.

a member aptly named '20withascooby' realised this after getting a lot of stick for the same sort of thing, and hopefully you will too.

good luck

And that, believe it or not, is a blooming good quote.

Many insurers will either refuse or give you a quote between 3-5k!!!

I pay around £800 for my sti 3. Hmm, I must be special. (or don't crash much ) Nothing to do with actually insuring cars in my own name since I was 18.

For a start - as others have mentioned dont try and illegally get insurance ( comitting fraud actually, which will make the insurance invalid, and could also get you nicked if the police stop you and arent happy ! ) with your mothers name - if you cant afford to insure the car in your own name legitimately then get a cheaper car.

But if you do want an Impreza - get some quotes for a UK car instead of an import - a lot of companies will charge LOADS more for imports if you dont have much NCB or are young.

When I was looking to buy my first Impreza I was getting quotes of £3500+ for imports, which is why I bought a UK car which was only £1200 for TPFT with no NCB. Second year once I had one years NCB this came down to £440 for TPFT and just over £600 for fully comp.

I'm 24, 3years n/c/b and 3points and my insurance for a 98sti is £990 with bell insurance. I did put my mum as a named driver which took a few hundred pound of the price, although she will never drive the car i dont believe theres any problem with that. But dont put the insurance in somebody elses name

mm, i paid £1300 when i was 23 for my first scoob, that was with 3 years no claims.

i got my first car at 19

1st pug 106 aged 19 - £1300 full comp, but i did make about 50 phone calls to get it that low
2nd brand new vauxhall astra sri 1.8 aged 10 to 23 - £1300, £1110, £950
3rd series mcrae impreza, bog standard aged 23 - £1100 (with 3y ncb)

then had huge smash, wrote it off and lost 2 years no claims

4th my00 uk turbo - £775 (this was with a big discount from remaining insurance on old policy which had paid out) aged 24, £950 aged 24, £675 aged 25, this year with a hell of alot of mods declared.

touch wood no points (pats head), and accident will dispear off next year all being well
