I got my renewal in last week from Norwich Union via Gladiator (who, interestingly enough, have the same address as Admiral and Bell Direct!). It has gone up from £400 to £650 (I know, I know, but I have age on my side for once) which is an increase of 63% and I have no changes since last year. I rang Karen at NFU (01604 883726) and asked for a quote, telling her about all my mods including front pipe, back box, wheels, Prodrive wing etc. etc. She was familiar with all of these and said she would ring back after speaking to their engineer. She rang back within 10 minutes and said that they would insure my car as an RB5 to cover the mods and quoted £323 for exactly the same cover as I already had or £372 with NCD protected!! The quotes were in the post that night and I have opted for the policy with NCD protection. I have to say that it is a long time since I have spoken to insurance people who were so pleasant and helpful - even their proposal form is simpler than most to complete. They come down heavily in favour of the more mature motorist like me ( ) but if you have left your teens a bit behind it won't hurt to ask. Another point is that without this BBS and the people who post on it I wouldn't have known about NFU in the first place so now it's been proved - Scoobynet saves you money!!

Can't agree more, after reading down a few of the posts - after Admiral had decided to double my premium I managed to get hold of NFU - they only open Mon-Fri, gave them my details (I think it was the delightful Karen - can the SIDC comitee send her a bunch of flowers out of the funds - I think she deserves it!), and they rang me back (in Belgium!) to give me the best quote I'd had by far - about half of what Admiral wanted, and not even a loading for my modified spoiler

Agree absolutely!! Whilst I don't live quite as far out in the sticks as Raymond does, I still got an excellent quote from NFU. With protected NCD, quotes were £438 with a £350 accident excess or £480 with a £250 excess.

This compares with a quote from my existing insurer Eagle Star, whom I've been with for years, of £750, with no NCD protection.

And top marks for Karen - absolutely charming, and really helpful.

Question

do you have to live in a "rural" area to get insured by NFU?

NFU Mutual were one of the better quotes on my Scooby (pick it up on Thursday from Holland) but, Frizzel were £495 compared to the NFU's £670! Both were £250 excess but Frizzel didn't need a Cat1 alarm system. Both offered full comp, protected no-claims.

How do they calculate these things.

Rob you were quoted £495 from Frizzells & £670 NFU for a nice shiny new car.

Frizzells currently charging me £800 ( £69.85 per month) just been quoted £385 ( £32.50 per month) from NFU

That's for an old bloke (47) with full NCB living in Bristol on a British MY95.

I get the feeling that frizzells charge whatever they think they can get away with.

Cool

I've just renewed my insurance with Bell direct as no one else could get near them. It went up from £405 protected ncd with £150 excess to £470 protected ncd with £150 excess. Thats with full ss exhaust, suspension and brake mods and driveway parked, not garaged. I have also relocated recently from the new forest to Sittingbourne, Kent (but that gave no increase itself). I'm only 29 and can't understand why people older than me are being quoted more by Bell and others??!! Funny old game, insurance, but I shan't be grumbling as long as it stays this cheap!

Toodle pip.
