Question Tints and insurance

Does anyone no if you have to declare tinted windows to your insurers ??

Although it doesnt really create extra risk it is probably classed as a mod ??

Unhappy

It's a modification so tell them!

Then they will reply that as the tints are more than likely illegal, your car is not fit for the road and therefore your insurance is void. That's what happened to me last year and I took the front tints off.

Yes, anything non manufacturer standard needs to be declared. Including tints, stickers, optional extras etc etc

Spoke to Direct Line today.

I asked them what difference the following would make to MY05 WRX policy :

Ninja back box
STI rear spoiler
Tints to side and rear windows

Ninja back box and STI spoiler will add £224.00 to my cover (9 months left)

The tints were a bit more tricky. With a 30% or less tint on the front and 50% on the rear there is no extra charge. If you go above this level of tint the prices go daft. Anything of 70% or more on the vehicle and they simply will not cover regardless of how much you are prepared to pay !!!

£224.00 sounds a lot for a back box and spoiler ????

What do you think.

If that represented a 10% hike it would be reasonable, difficult to gauge without knowing the full premium.

Be careful with front tints, you can have 30% however most windows have a light tint on them as standard which coupled with your new tint would be deemed illegal.
