Default UK STI vs JDM STI

All being equal what tends to be the difference between a quote for a UK spec STI and a Japanease import STI?

£50
£100
£500!

Which insurance companies are the cheapest for JDM STI insurance?

Would a JDM Spec C be even more expensive?

Any examples.

Thanks.

It depends on your age, JDM STi's especially rare ones will be harder to insure than a UK STi, but i have found (after quite a bit of hunting about) that A-Plan will insure for a similar price (depending on experience and age) to a UK car.

Jag1977,

Generally a Spec C will be classed as a Jap Spec STi. My Spec C costs me just over £900 pa. It obviously depends on your circumstances as well. Comparatively my previous UK STi was about £740.00. Based on full ncb bonus protected, one claim, no convictions, 34yrs young.

Regards,
Shaun.

Not really, similar price for both my spec c and a uk sti, ended up with just under 900 per year fully comp protected so not bad though a couple of years older than Shaun (2 )

With Norwich Union I found a UK STI WR1 was around £100-£120 more than a standard UK STI.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the WR1 have 300BHP like the standard JDM STI?

I'm hoping a JDM STI would be little, if any more expensive than a WR1 to insure.

I've been won over by the JDM Impreza's after a visit to Langtree garage in Wigan

JDM STi's tend to push around the 300bhp mark out of the box, the wr1 has 315bhp but thats because it has the PPP fitted as a part of the package, though you can remap the JDM STi to be more flexible due to the twin scroll setup (MY03 onward) but a panel filter will probably see you nice for around 10bhp (STi)
Prices should be similar though, and you do get a better car with the JDM

I doubt insurance companies are quite clued up enough to worry about a few bhp here and there. They're more worried about availability of parts to repair a JDM car in the event of a crash, and build a bit extra into the premium to cover their extra perceived risk.

The problem is just really that it may narrow down the range of companies who will offer you a realistic quote - the company that would have given you the best quote on a UK car may not be so good for imports.

Try A-plan's dedicated import department, www.greyimportinsurance.co.uk
