No insurance company as yet can quote me for a 2.5 conversion
I have phoned a few companies listed on here for a quote regarding a 2.5 conversion. I list the upgrades without going into too much detail, low mileage use etc , but as yet no one has come back to quote a figure- "we'll have to speak to the underwriters" is the usual response. I am an old git now(40) with loads of NCB and no convictionsm, car is garaged and has security.
eg
phoned Rob at A plan, he heard of a type 25 but never heard of anybody doing this conversion on a older Impreza .
Adrian flux - wont quote
Hyperformance -wont quote
footmanjames - wont quote- too big a bhp increase, FFS, told them it would only go upto 290 bhp
You guys that have done this conversion would you tell me which companies you are dealing with, and what to and what not to say to them?

Thanks to 911 I contacted his insurers and 'spilled the beans'. They didn't bat an eyelid and quoted, what I think, was a good price. Footman James:

I had real trouble getting cover for my Classic with 2.5 block. Capacity increases are not popular with insurers - I don't know why.
To cut a long story short, Churchill offered cover but wanted a Tracker fitting. Then A-Plan came in a bit cheaper and no tracker required.
Contact Darren at A-Plan, on 01635 874646. This department specialises in modded cars. They wanted me to state the car's power output as a percentage over stock and I said 50%. They also wanted reassurance of a professional rebuild, so I had to send the receipt from API Engines - bit of a bugger for DIYers.
I also did not disclose the full list of mods which is what frightened off my original insurers, I think (but they cover Type 25s for God's sake). You try writing down every modification you've done and it's a very long list. I think the catch-can was one mod too much for them LOL.
I simply said, "increased capacity to 2.5l, modified induction and exhaust, uprated running gear (brakes, suspension etc)" They're happy, and so am I.

Matt, I didn't ask! Must check that out with them, but if that's what they've told you, I guess that's their policy.
TBH, that would suit me fine, as standard parts probably cost about the same as my modded bits. I assume that if I binned it and say wrecked a front corner, they would pay up for the repairs and allow me the cost of an OEM wheel, tyre, brake and strut, and I would pay the difference to get my Prodrive and AP replacements.
That would certainly be preferable to the situation with my previous insurer Norwich Union, who would only give me the second-hand value of the parts. Now where the hell am I going to get one used AP caliper?
If the car is stolen, I have put a value of £15k on it with mods. If they gave me that, I think I could just about replicate the car I've got, but it would take months of work and a lot of grief, and how do you estimate the 'market value' of a modded Scoob? There would probably be some argument about it.
That is one big advantage of going for a standard car, like an STi with PPP, as there's no question of its value or the cost of replacement bits.
Oh, the joys of modded motors When I grow up, I'm gonna get a Golf diesel. When do you think that will be? I'm 52 this year...
