Shocking Insurance quote
I have a Celica ...
Tesco's quoted me 485 quid. Great I thought. But, they had it down as a UK car and mine is an import.
O ne call later, same details except it now says, import, but I had to confirm the 'extra' security on it. So with extra security the price changes to £950!!!!!!!
So I told them I was wrong and it was a UK car

Had a similar issue a few years back
Checked Insurance docs and was insured for a Galant V6 2.5L
It should have been a imported Galant VR4
Phoned up so called insurance people it was a Saturday
And was told we will look into it and fcall you Monday
WAS told very clearly NOT TO DRIVE CAR as INSURANCE is INVALID

Matt - have a long hard think about what you've said. The stupidity of it is almost unbelievable. You're risking not insuring your car - losing everything, including your licence if you're unlucky enough to be involved in a serious accident. Insurance company could also sue you for fraud - AND this is the reason we all pay extra on our insurance!!
Have a hunt around and find a specialist broker. Most of the mainstream insurance companies are not used to dealing with imports, so they load the premiums.
Publicly stating what you are about to do is also pretty stupid - the board has a very wide readership. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that this will get back to Tesco Insurance.

So why post this up if you weren't going to do it? I'll hand you a shovel and you can keep digging yourself in deeper. Sorry - this really winds me up. We pay a fortune for insurance in this country and the reason we do is because of things like this. If you can't afford to insure and run the car properly perhaps you should not have the car?

Chris L - I was shocked that the quote doubled, that's why I posted it. Or are you saying I shouldn't post things I find shocking/funny/interesting/ offensive?
If you read the title it said QUOTE. Not I have a POLICY.

Matt,
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have made a note with that quote about you saying it was an import and then changing your mind/making a mistake. If you were to go ahead and pay the lower quote and had a claim, they would probably send an assessor round to check the import status...

Matt be very careful.
You have indeed put yourself in a hole here.
Yes you have asked for a quote but the last line of the topic thread has left you wide open. You have made a false statement to an insurance company.
These are from law books.

Nope you're wrong.
I have simply asked for 3 quotes, 2 UK, 1 import. I simply asked for the UK quote again to make sure it was in fact correct.
I have no intention of paying £950 on insurance. I would never lie on an actual policy.

Matt - well your wording was not implying that in your original post - or the use of the smiley. It seems to me that most people got the same impression of what you were intending to do. Again, why post it? We all know imports cost more to insure than UK cars. As I said before - by asking a mainstream insurer who is more interested in Mr Average and his Vauxhaul Astra - what did you expect?

Chris, I told you, I posted it because I was shocked that it doubled. I expected a slight increase, but not that much, 100% is quite a sharp rise.
As for why ask a mainstream insure, yeah, real dumb of me to get quotes from lots of different sources.
You seem to have a problem with this and won't let go. Admit you got the wrong end of the stick and apologise and all is forgotten. I see no need to further justify what I post to you.
Your comments are basiclly saying I shouldn't have the car and shouldn't search for the best deal. And shouldn't post anything where there is no purpose to the post other than to vent my fustration.
I can afford to insure and run the car, I see no need to pay over the odds for a service.
I await your apology.

yeah but you also said in your first post "one CALL later" and "so i TOLD them i was wrong" i to understood it as you were going to lie to the insurance just to get a cheaper quote

Matt, I openly apologise because I read it as you were going ahead with the insurance which would have put yourself and others in a bad situation should anything have arisen.
It read to me that you already had the insurance with Tesco at 485 quid, but then rang to tell them it was an import, at which point you changed your mind. Sorry chap

1) You got a quote for a UK car;
2) You called again corrected it and got a quote for an import.
That's all the info you needed, and you could have posted this on here for us to moan about. However, you then did:
3) "So I told them I was wrong and it was a UK car "
Why bother telling a company you don't intend to insure with that the info you gave them was wrong, when you already had all the info you needed????
Trying to dig yourself out of this one is pointless! Give up now and accept you were dishonest. Everyone who has replied so far, without exception, read your post in this way. Hopefully you've not actually taken the policy, as I for one would not want to be on the same stretch of road as you....

Cheers Hanslow.
Bodgery - almost right. in point 1 I asked for a quote on my current car which they got wrong I.e UK not import. On correcting the information it doubled the cost so I advised them it was a UK car, again the cost halved.
Anyway it's been explained, if you still can't get over it that is your problem.
