Protected no claims discount

Protected no claims discount
Just bought a new car and have tranfered the policy from my old car to the new one.
This policy is due to expire early in January, I have got over 9 years no claims discount protected at the moment. I have had a quote from my insurance for the new policy/car for Jan and am happy with it.
But the thing is if I don`t protect my no claims I can save nearly £60( I could really do with that at the moment )
Now if i dont protect and have a claim next year how many years of the 9 would they deduct, like I`ve said it`s always 9 years that show even though I`ve got over that.
I though that it was 5 years and you could claim maximum discount on your insurance premium.

The 9 years is just a reference to how long you've been claim free. As you say, the max NCB is usually five years worth or thereabouts. So if you have a claim you'd probably lose two years' entitlement - that is, you'd go from five years' NCB to three years' NCB.

DieselDoo,
To be honest and IMHO I would always recommend protecting the No Claims Discount (NCD)...whilst an insurer will show maybe 9 or 10 years No Claims, generally their discount scale goes up to 5 (i.e. 1 year 30%, 2 years 40%, 3 50%, 4 60% and 5 65%) - however various companies like Groupama and Chaucer have scales that go to 7, 8 or 9!!.
In the event of a claim in most circumstances your No Claims Discount (NCD) would be reduced from their maximum i.e. 65% to 50% for one claim....however if you had a 2nd claim in the same policy period then I think you'll find that the NCD is reduced to NIL!!!
If the Protection is going to cost you £60.00 for 12 months - of to put it another way 16p per day, or £1.15p per week or a fiver a month!! then I would suggest that following a claim and the increased premium of at least 15% (just taking into account the loss of NCD) year one....and a further 5% year 2 would cost you more in the long run in increased premium...
Now as we all know, insurance is a gamble!! Do you go Third Party Fire and Theft or Comprehensive - do you go for limited mileage or unlimited, do you garage or park on the drive....fit Tracking or not....all options avaialable that may or may not reduce the premium....
Personally for little over the cost of a tank of fuel or an average night out I'd protect it....
In answer to your question if you have a claim insurers will deduct 2 years NCD

My wife had a claim with Direct line this year and on renewal the premium went down
That's with their protected no-claims, good value IMO.
