I've just tried getting a quote from them. Very pleasant young man was on the phone who had no clue whatsoever about UK car insurance.
Apparently my car is a WRX SL. We had the devil's own game working out that the SL was a particular variant of the WRX. In fact, I doubt it got worked out. We then moved onto other security. Navtrak? Tracking device? Is that thatcham category one? What about an immobiliser? Is it an alarm? I think we sorted it out, but I wouldn't put money on it.
"Do you need business use sir?" he asked.
"I travel to different offices of the same company occasionally" say I.
"So do you want business use?".
"You tell me"
"I can't".
"Oh".
"You see, I'm sitting in India and I do not know whether that is business use or not"
"Well, how should I know - insurers classify these things differently. Some say it is, some say it isn't. Hang on, you're in India. That's outside of the EU. You haven't told me how you protect my data, as it is an offense to export data outside of the EU to a country that doesn't have the appropriate data protection laws"
"Ah, the computer is in the head office in norwich".
"That's a long keyboard cable that you have"
"What?"
etc.
I ended up asking them to delete my information, and never to contact me again.
If that's how good their quote line is, I can only imagine their claims line.
Not happy at all. I'm all for cost savings, but getting someone who doesn't know the first thing about motoring in the UK to talk to people about car insurance is like asking me to describe what it's like being blind from birth.
Cheers,
Nick.

That was Norwich Union Direct... 0800 092 9564.
Very pleasant guy. He said that they'd never seen the "quote me happy" adverts, but that someone was sending them a CD with it on...

surely if you are ringing them for a quote, then you are exporting your data outside of the EU, via the phone - its not Norwich Union doing it?
If they have customer services/claims there too, then you might have a point.
