Advanced driving to get insurance down...
#1
I'm looking at the insurance costs for getting an Impreza Turbo and they are pretty damned high for me. However, one of my mates has the same car and got 30% off his Tesco's quote (effectively got a years no claims for free) because he had taken a 6 hour "Pass Plus" course (for about £130). I've just looked into it though and the Pass Plus is only available to drivers who have had their full licence for under year i.e. just taken their test. No good for me....
I was wondering if anyone knew of any other similar schemes that are recognised by insurance companies, but for "normal" drivers - not new drivers?

yeah - i had a scout around on that site. It seems to imply that the course is quite tough though "within reach of most motorists providing they have the correct guidance". Seems to require quite a lot of commitment.
The pass plus seemed like a fairly easy 6 hour course after which you were issued a certificate which you can use to get insurance down.
I'm hoping their is an equivalent course around that caters for all drivers.

Well worth doing !
It makes a very good first step. I wouldn't put too much hope on it getting your premium down as such, but it will help reduce your risk of accident (and so may help you keep your NCD).
I should add that this is all age and history dependant !!

the IAM course typically lasts 12 weeks, and really needs an 'observed' session weekly. Some drive to the Roadcraft system naturally, and can pass within a few weeks, some need to change habits that are engrained after years of driving (often through no fault of their own) and it takes the full 12 weeks.
Well worth doing though, best £85 you'll ever spend

I think there's an advanced drivers course that you could do (may have summat to do with the cops) which could bring cost down. I was told bout it when I first passed cos if you do PassPlus and advanced drivers course, you don't get any extra discount than if yo uonly do 1 Try the DVLA or BSM websites, they may have info.
