Imports and LV... confused - you will be!

Thought this recent exchange of emails with LV might interest others.
LV's response...
"Mr B*****,
Thank you for your email.
The underwriters position on imported cars has not changed. If the car is a
"grey" import then we will not insure this.
The best way to check (without contacting our call centre) is to try the
Online application. If you input your registration number or the car is
selectable from the dropdown list and you are able to obtain a quotation
then we will insure the vehicle.
I am currently investigating your point around discrepancies that appear in
the quick quote data as opposed to the apply online application.
I hope that the above has answered your query. If you have any further
queries then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Comment : Has LV recently changed its
attitude towards insuring Japanese imports? I ask for 2 reasons.
1) The website now states that imports cannot be insured, but I got quotes
for doing exactly that earlier in the year via your Quick Quote facility
(which seems to have now disappeared from the sitemap).
2) The list of vehicles for, say, Subarus is now much much shorter than it
used to be on the Quick Quote basis - when it included virtually all the
well known imports in the Impreza, Forester and Legacy ranges.
3) I "bookmarked" the Quick Quote page earlier this year for future
reference. If I return to this I can still access the full list of
imports... and get quotes for them!
I ask all this because the insurance on my Forester import is due early next
year and I am keen to move to LV - but can't now get a quote via the "main"
website but can via the bookmarked Quick Quote page!
I look forward to hearing from you very shortly..."
Now, to me, that seems fairly definitive, but I know of several people who insure imports with LV... some of whom have had to make claims, which LV have paid without a problem.
When my renewal comes up early next year I'm definitely going to try and get it through just to see what happens. Meantime, for those of you with imports insured thru' LV, do they include a model description on the policy schedule - if so I wouldn't have thought they (LV) have a leg to stand on if they tried to reject a claim (but I'm no lawyer so please don't rely on this!).

The mystery deepens...
On the same page as LV claim not to insure imports they also state that they will not insure any car which has been subject to any peformance orientated modification!!! Yet, it seems quite clear from the many people posting on here that they not only permit such modifications, but don't even charge any extra.
So it appears that LV are either rather inconsistent, or are not entirely sure of their own underwriting criteria. I'll try and get both issues clarified by someone in the underwriting dept during the next few days... and will try and report back in due course.

I have a Legacy GT-V Ltd Ed. Basically the same as a std Legacy GT, but with different seats and a MOMO wheel, but because it didn't match 'EXACTLY' what they had in their list - they wern't interested!
Seems to me they are losing a lot of business just in Scoobs alone!
On the other hand, Admiral couldn't have been more helpfull and insured my car with no worries. It wasn't on the list but they noted the exact model on the policy notes saying 'we appreciate there are many different models of Imports, so we use some basic catagories and group cars together'. I was a little worried by this, so phoned back a day later and got someone else who relayed my 'EXACT' model car to me and said it is fully covered! No problem then. Admiral almost got to the LV price as well!

I just got a qoute for my uk turbo with mods but their web page said "no modifications" so i rang them and they said no worries as long as you dont up the cc's, in other words do what you like and take photos if you want to claim for the mods in a theft or total loss claim,
my personal advice would be to ring them
also tried to get an online quote from direct line and couldn't get past the "tracker" page, rang them and they said i dont have to have one as long i have got cat 1, so just goes to show

I'm 29, and just tried getting a quote with L.V, despite having been with them 7+ yrs they won't touch me until I've been 30 for a few mths. They say they won't insure under 30's on a grp 20 car. So I'm struggling to try and get a 'decent' quote at the mo. Tesco so far £1600 & need tracker and CAT1. Looks like I'm not going to own one just yet, most Co's are quoting OVER £2k !!! FFS clean license no claims in 9yrs WTF !!!
