Hi - Coupla questions for all you ICE men out there....
I have the Alpine CDM-7856R CD / receiver headunit installed in Scoob and have noticed that its always illuminated, whether the cars lights are on or not.
Is this correct? Previous headunits (Sony/Kenwood) I've had only illuminated the buttons/display when the cars lights were on (i.e. at night)
Also, any suggestions for front and rear speaker upgrades (the cars a MY00 Gertjan special!) Thinking of going for Alpine again to match the CD changer/headunit but not sure about the best options. Probably wont bother with an amp for the time being (2 kiddies in the back prevent this!)
Any ideas?
Ta

Not too sure about that particular unit but I have had four, no five Alpine units. All of which illuminated whether the lights were on or not.
As far as speakers go I think Infinity speakers get the most reccomendations here.

Nathan..

budget -front and rears together - £200-£300max
music - anything from Manic to Radiohead to Chem brothers.
The original speakers sound pretty awful - can I expect a big improvement by upgrading, or is the acoustic environment of the Scoob (high back seats etc) just too bad?

I'd be tempted to forget rear speakers, but that's just me.
For 200 quid you can get some very good sounding speakers that will excel in the Scoob.
I personally run CD Technologies HD62s (350 quid), and rate them as a clear, natural sounding units. They've also got an entry level component set for around 160 quid - have a listen, it may suit you, it may not. I have a wide taste in music, from alternative through to dance through to female vocals through to rap and most points in between, and nothing sounds weak or offensive.
The difference in replacing the (front) speakers is great. Everything becomes so much clearer...
I did run with the original units left in the back shelf for a few months, faded out, and these actually can use the boot space to provide quite a bit of bass.
You may want to consider MB Quart, or the ubiquitous Infinity, too.
Listen to as many speakers IN CARS rather than on a stand to get an idea of what you like...
Where in the country are you? I dare say there'll be someone local that will let you listen to their setup.

Hi Chiark
You're probably right, the fronts seem to letting the system down at the moment.
I'm in Notts so will have a trip down to the local dealer and have a look over the options.
Good tip BTW about listening to the speakers in the car not on the stand.
thanks
Neil
ps - hows that LIMP system coming along?
