If I get time ...!! I fancy making new cabinets. This time I will use 1.inch MDF. Will it improve the sound quality. I will seal etc with silicon. What effect can "loft type insulation make,if put inside??

Wadding inside a box will make the box appear bigger to the speaker by about 20%, Therefor a smaller box a smaller box can be built.

No, I don't. It'll have the effect of making the speaker think it's in a "bigger" box, apparently. Works well with some drivers, not well with others. Bit of a black art. Suck it and see?

Thanks guys.
It seems to be ok now, Enigma machines no longer required.

I understand that Rockwool type stuff can release tiny fibers which can get into the speakers voice coil through the cooling vent in the magnet. My box is just lined with approx. 1" thick white wadding, it's about 15% smaller than the speakers recomended enclosure size and it works very well. Tight puchy bass, i love it.
The box was purchased from Auto Acoustics because they build bl**dy good boxes. It contains 2 x Infinity reference 1020w 10" subs.

I would give Auto Acoustics a call for info on the wadding they use, i'd tell you the guys name to speak to but i can't remember it (it is late or early whichever way you look at it) sorry. You could always forget the wadding and build the box to the right spec. Theres been talk about silicon, I would also suggest the use of plenty of wood glue, not just when building the box but also along the joins when it's built. Sqeeze it into the gaps (some of my early boxes years ago had gaps large enough to put my fingers through) then use a rag to wipe off the excess, let it dry then get jiggy with the silicon.

Give that sub a nice strong home Luke and it will Love you all the more. You may even fall in love with it, do the decent thing and end your current relationship first though.

Iron brew flavoured Vodka, Falling in love with subs. Stone me, it's 3am. nite nite

Don't use insulation type stuff (rockwool). The tiny .......... just spilt squash ocver the keyboarsd, it's inserting leeters all by itseldf.+fddfdfsdsddssddfdfdfdfsdfsdsdsddfsdfsdsds sdsdsdsdsssssdsdsdsssdsdsdsdssdssdssdsdsdsdsdsdssd ssdsddfdfsdfdsddfsddfdfdfdfdfdffdddddddddddddddddd ddddddddddddfddddddddddddddddddffffffffffdfdfdfdf.

i hopwe you'cvwe got an Enigma maxchine youre endfs to fsdecxipheer thisa mesasaage.
wheere was iF? oh yes, The tiny dfibeers may get into the cvoixce xcoil therough the cvent in the magnet.
My box is just linesd with white wasdsding. It's about 15% smaller than the speakers recormensdesd size ands works cvery very well.
I sdexcisdesd to buy it dfrom Auto Axcoustixcs as i xcan't buisd a box as well as they can.

I've got orange squaxsh everywhere. i'll retype this post when my keyboard dries out a bit.
