as in for a house stereo?
or for the garage.?
i use a old cd player and amp set up in the garage,6x9's or any other componets, will need a box to sound good, but only a small box will do for them.
then wire to car battery and job done..
just remember to put a in-line fuse to the red like you would in your car...

job done

if you are going to do it you'd be better off with a 13.5v power supply. Same type that you would use for a cb.
Your speakers will also need to be in boxes.
