Default Focal Speakers - anyone rate them ?

Evening peeps,

After years of road use, and engine up-grading, I'm bored with the oily bits...

I have listened to/been advised to fit Focal 165VRS speakers in the front doors of my bug-eye.
They are being sourced from overseas, as they are around £100 cheaper !

So are they any good ?

I would like to keep my budget down to £200-ish as I feel any more would be wasted as the exhaust isn't that quiet at motorway speeds.

Already have an Alpine Head unit controlling a digital bass amp and a 10" DVC sub.

Thanks,

dunx

i would normally put them in the original places if your car has them,i cannot remember the last time i sawyour carif not put them on the dash in the corners of each a-post and adjust the crossover to suite.depending on the rms raiting on the speakers you might get away with just using your head unit, but they WILL sound better on a amp!!

Focal's are great speakers they sound even better when bi amped.

i'e you have a either 2 x 2 channel amps or 1 x 4 channel amp.
Then 1 amp runs the tweeters and one amp runs the woofers(2 x 2 channel amps) or
The front 2 channels run the tweeters and the rear 2 channels run the woofers (1 x 4 channel amp)

Gives you lots of flexibility and fine tuning brings out the best of fantastic speakers.

Be warned; there are some counterfeit focals floating about. So if they are cheap, give them a very close inspection. Not sure if you can cross ref. serial numbers, but its worth checking just in case.

I have some on the back shelf sound great.
The installer recommended them but I had never even heard of them before but I took the gamble anyway. Well I was amazed they where so much better than my Alpine type R's
Go for it you wont be disappointed.

I have the Focal 165VRS speakers in the front doors of my hawk-eye and absolutely love them!!

Never heard them before they were fitted - took the advice of the audio installer - they sound better with some dynamat soundproof matting too.

I'll probably be looking at a FoCal amp and sub later on in the year.

Yeah I have had a bit on not been on here for weeks with the baby, finishing the house and work not had a spare minute.
I was in the UK last weekend (to get a kitchen and tyres) I could have brought them over for you.
Everything else on that site looks expensive maybe they made a mistake with the Focals

Hi Dunx,

I had these speakers in my Spec C and they are now in the Swift - very good as long as you use an amp (I have a Genesis). Very, very good.

Makes my Pork sound really crap.

Get yourself some Focals, you wont be disappointed!

I have a set of focal comps 16.5 in the front & a JL 12" sub in the boot, all powered by a Harmon Kardon Amp & it sounds very clear & natural as intended at all levels & frequency's (however this is in my Mk4 golf gti) *also note i have them mounted with custom mdf rings etc to get the best sound etc.
If you fit with the plastic adaptors, speakers (to me) seem to loose their sharpness & loose out on some bass. - just my opinion!

Ive bought many stereo's & speakers over the years & my current Focal speakers are some of the best sounding ive heard.
(other good make would be Boston's)
