Default What is the correct way to install..

A single din head unit in a UK facelift classic?
The way I've done it, is with the cage attaching to the stereo surround, as thats the only way I could see it working.
But that way, all you need to do is pull off the stero surround to remove it.
That can't be right can it?

Best way i found is to fit the cage in first ( after removing the old headunit of course ) it will have lil tabs to bend in so it locks into the dash. Once that is in securely...hook the wires up and make sure it all works first correctly, dont really wanna be pulling it all back out again. Then jus push the headunit into the cage until it locks in...may need some gentle persuassion as theres alot of wires in there.
You should then be sorted!!

I've done that, well maybe. You don't specify what to bend the tabs of the cage into, as once the front panel that contains the switches and the surround for the heater control is removed, there is nothing behind it.
So I bend the cage tabs around the front panel, but it doesn't feel right, as you have a visible lip of the cage protruding.

you dont need the whole front off with the switches to fit the new one....put it back on and push the cage into the whole....u can then bend the tabs down behind the lip of plastic on the front...there shouldnt be a lip protruding, it should fit flush...sorry that doesnt really make sense or help you

Yeah I know it don't need to come off, but I was swapping double DIN back to single.
Still, apart from thats surround, there is nothing else for the cage to lock onto, and that can't be right.
When I got my car, there was no stereo, so I've never known it any other way.

what you need is an autoleads facia adaptor. google "autoleads" and you should find one for your model.

I don't think there is any autoleads fascia adapter that can help.

No ones seems to understand what I mean.

This is how my HU looks fitted:

You can see the lip of the cage, as it only clips to the stereo surround.

To remove the stereo, I can just pull off the surround like so:

Not very secure.
Thats because there is nothing inside that a cage can be fixed to:

right, i can see the problem now. what you need to do is take the brackets off the oem head unit and fix them onto your clarion. if you don't have the oem brackets, you should be able to get them from a scrappy. hope this helps.

yes i'm sure about that. before i saw your pictures i thought you were trying to put a single din head unit into a double din hole. so forget autoleads. if you look at the side of your clarion you will see threaded holes. you will find that these holes line up with the holes on the oem brackets. it' just a matter of screwing the brackets onto your head unit and screwing the whole enchilada into the aperture. it's a bloody good way of installing the head unit and it makes it damn difficult (but not impossible) for a TWOCer to f**k off with your stereo. hope you get it sorted.

I do have OEM brackets, from when I did try to convert to a double din. So I'll give it a try.
So that way I wouldn't need the cage at all?

no joey, you wouldn't need the cage at all. you can take it out, polish it up, take it into the house and use it as a nice little toast rack!. (only joking). if you want to make the TWOCer's job a little more difficult, what you can do is when you fix the brackets onto your head unit, pinch your girlfriends nail polish, (she might not be too happy about it, but your scoob comes first, right) and blob the nail polish around the threads of the screws before you put them in. be careful not to get any inside the head unit though. do the same for the screws fixing the brackets to the dash. you could also use 4 different types of screw head. TWOCer's don't carry tool kits! let me know if you get it sorted.

Its been in, but the way that I'm not sure is correct. But now its in, I can't be bothered to change it TBH.
Unless I get a "car day" again soon. Thanks for the advice though.
