Need about 200 watts to drive 2 x JL8W6 speakers giving a 1.5ohm load(New one arrived today £90.00 from states, over £200.00 here!!)Using "Punch 40" at the moment. Would consider good secondhand one. Maybe a larger "Punch" . What are the Stars of the past??? Fitted new "Soundstream" to front speakers,Sounds great.

rockford have always been pants in my opinion. for low ohmage a big phoenix gold such as ms series. can be found second hand but very smooth and warm. Massive power when loaded down. Could go for later range such as M50 or m25 which also push very hard. Cheaper range include phoenix gold sapphire 3.0x which works very well.
Any soundstream reference amp will more than cope. and sound great. More expensive amps should be used on the front end. Bass quality is not as important.
Try to avoid using rockford, especially at low ohmage.
MTX high end amps will dot he job as will as will lanzar etc. just not my preferred amp.
I will alw\ys be a phoenix gold man myself, sticking with my zx450 which does everything in the world already.

All I can say is it's going to be expensive... do you have to run at 1.5ohm Is 1.5ohm the resistance of the coils... how are they wired... are you bridging them and have you taken this into account when working out the impediance?

Each speaker is a dual 6.ohm load. Bridging two together will produce a load of 1.5ohm (Ref: JL. Spec sheet). The Punch 40. is according to its spec sheet giving me about 150 watts. I want to increase this so giving the amp more headroom.
Adam Do you know "DH Electronics"? Thought I might try them.
I could use a pair od channels on my "Soundstream 164" a 4 x 40 watt amp.Bridge them for sub use. Worried if it will like the load.mentions about not going lower than 2/3ohm bridged.
AM I CORRECT WITH MY LOAD THAT AN AMP WILL SEE ???? The + cable will run too all 4 (2xspeakers.2 one each speaker) + speaker terminals.Likewise the - cable.
Cheers
Luke
Adam.... Do you know of a good amp for sale???

Hi.
I gotta agree with Adam M on the Pheonix Gold option
They are stable to 0.5ohm with no threat of blowing up the amp (the fan may speed up a bit though to compensate)
I have a ZX350 powering a JL12W6 in a custom 4"ported box along with a 1 farad Lightning Audio CAP and people never believe I only have one sub until I show them. It is definately is worth taking your time to set it up right (soldering speaker connections/running good cables etc..) and it will pay dividends for a long time to come.
I trust you will be wiring up both the voice coils on the subs...there was a diagram I got with my PG (or was it the JL..?) which explains on how to wire up >1 speaker with/without dual voice coils. I will see if I can find it and scan it for ya.
You can probably pick up an older M series PG for 25-300GBP. The ZX will be 300-350GBP, but a more stable and technologically a much better amp.

1.5 ohm bridged mono means teh amps channels will see .75 ohms. Igf they can handle it (which few will) then it will produce a lot of heat and a lot of power!
a Class D amp might be a good idea for such use.
I would avoid a rockford for this purpose like the plague. I dont trust them at 4 ohms bridged let alone 1.5 ohms.
I second and third myself again by saying go for a phoenix gold.
I know of DH electronics but there are only a few shops I trust for proper knowledge.
The best being audio images 01274 733 633.
they may be in bradford but they will do mail order and are the most honest salesmen I know, (except for Craig H of NAM).
Prestige used to be ok, but I dont trust them of late unless you are speaking to Bob Hobson himself. If they can arrange this then you can treat his word as gospel, he literally is the best man this side of the atlantic when it comes to this job. The only one I know of with university training in electronics, sound and acoustics, and with the practical experience and knowledge to give decent advice.
ps. does this mean you live near me?

I used to go to Prestige, but I found another shop with the same merchandise, a bit cheaper and with friendlier staff.
001Mobile in Hersham (I think). It's between Walton on Thames and Esher).
Tel: 01932 253001

I can get all the products that prestige sell for much cheaper. The reason I recommend them is for their access to bob hobson and their ability to make installs look either factory or much much more stylish if you are that way inclined ( i prefer stealth).
There is more to car audio shops than sales!
