Default London Car Audio Installation

Just got my car back from Hendon Car Stereo, they did a great job of butchering it. It now has its first, second and third big interior scratches. An amp attached to the back seat (in the boot) at a wonky angle. And last but not least the cheapest Alpine speakers available because they couldn't fit the ones I asked for, even though the Alpine brochure says they should fit.

So now my car sounds worse than it did with the original system in place.

Can someone tell me where I can find a real installation specialist, someone who will appreciate that taking door panels off requires a delicate touch and not leave my car covered in scratches. I need to get this work fixed, help...

Picking it up this week, getting a the boot boxed off to create a small sub area with the subs firing through the ski hatch, and components in the doors with dynamatting all round. Its going to be a full alpine type R system.

Its taking a long time, I'm getting nervous about the price...

Fingers crossed though, I'll keep you posted.

Got my car back last night...

Its so good I nearly wept...The price was verging on ridiculous but the work the guys at AUTO AUDIO have done is just amazing!!!

I had asked for co-axial speakers in the rear as I'd read they don't make much difference, but they weren't happy with the sound and took it all out and refitted components in the rear and mounted the tweeters in the door. Its so neat I missed it until they pointed them out.

The system is Apline type R components front and rear, and a type R 12" sub mounted in the boot to fire through the ski hatch. So when parked up you can put the arm rest up and no one can see anything, sweet.

They've mounted both amps (one for sub, one for the doors) either side of the sub in the rear but its all so tidy I'm really really really impressed.

Next to my car they had a vintage DB6 getting a subtler stereo, opposite a ferrari and a gallardo. I was free to walk around the fitting room while they got my car out for me. Some of the work they were doing was amazing, and as they are working on such expensive cars you can imagine the finish is first class.

So if you're a detail fanatic, I would highly recommend them.

I'll get pictures this weekend, if anyone is interested?

They charge 65 an hour, and they quoted me 8 hours when I turned up they told me it had taken 34 ! We agreed to settle at 12 hours, so all in (dynamatting, cables, etc) 2k.

**** me..................£2K for the install. Think I'd have fainted not wept. At Least you got it properly done and for a lot less than it should have been. Still like to see what they did for that price.

OUCH, i'm sure they've done a great job mate, but that is a serious amount of money to pay for the work you've had done.

the important thing is that our happy with it.

for that kinda money you should expect ALOT better quality product, because that alpine stuff is very average basic stuff mate.

Well it does sound good even for average speakers , but I'm willing to listen to better any offers ??

Breakdown of the cost:

alpine spr17ls components x 2 = £320
apline swr 1242D 12" sub = £199
alpine mrp-m650 amp = £250
amp wiring kit = 50
Dynamat 457mm x 812mm x 4 = £99.96
BFH 11 Fuse holder = £28
PC1-2M Y Lead 1m-2f x 2 = £24
Fitting 12 hours £65 per hour = £780

Be interesting to find out any comparative costs, I know the speakers etc are much cheaper from other suppliers, thing is I'd already taken it to Hendon car stereo and they managed to do more damage than good with their £160 installation costs.

You've all upset me now

Didn't realise that £2k including all the gear. Still not cheap but if you want a job doing properly then it ain't gonna be cheap tbh. I've seen the work they did on the Porsche Cayenne which is Alpine demo car........not your usual dodge it and scarper job.

I'd hardly call the Alpine kit MrSimpson has "average".

"well above average" certainly!!!

Yes you probably could have got it done cheaper elsewhere but they also sorted out the mess created, from the sounds of it.

Main thing - enjoy it!!!

Should the sub not be in a sealed/ported box?

Why did'nt they build the box at the time of install? I'm suprised a respected Ice installer would of mounted a sub that was intended for use in a box like this, was there a reason for this?

To be honest there wasn't a reason no its just how they did it, I researched after I got the car back and found out that this speaker needs to be in a box. Couldn't face the hassle of taking it back though to be honest...

It has left me with a lower opinion of the company though, very disappointing.

Any one know what the best solution would be? should I have the sub enclosed where it is now, so its firing through the ski-hatch?

Or should the sub be facing another way, and have it ported through the ski hatch?

As it would will be fine seeing as that's how everything is installed now plus it has a nice stealth aspect to it being hidden behind the arm rest. Ask them to box the sub in, of course making sure it's sealed and re-mount the amps on the back of the sub box. Really they should of done this in the first place and not left this sub "free-air". Once done i'd expect there to be a big difference in the quality of the bass.

I cant believe someone of auto-audio's calibre let a system go out with a free air sub !!!!

That is shocking considering the level that these guys usually work at. Glad to hear that it's getting sorted out.
