Default ICE newbie question

Hi all

getting fed up with the standard Subaru audio setup.

Looking at what is out there. Too vast.

My personal taste is for the works of Mr Jagger, Mssrs Iron Maiden, Mr Strummer et al, and any early 90's indie etc. I am not looking for a huge bass boom box. I would like more ooomph.

The wife likes..... well, who cares.

I have a Pioneer DEH-P70BTwith 4 X 50W. However I also have standard speakers which I consider crap. ( I have a Spec D)

What sort of budget for an amp and a decent set of speakers. I would prefer not having to knock holes in the car.

Advice please:-)

cheers
BD

change the speakers for something more up market and you may well be pleasantly surprised with the change in quality. Allow some extra cash for some dynamat or other sound deadening and you'll be well away.

If that doesnt work then you'll be looking for a decent four or two way amplifier for a bit of extra kick.

Decide on a budget yourself (coz I'd make you bankrupt) and stick to it as far as reasonably possible.

Pssst... BD.... Go take a peek here and join the merry band..!!

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...roll-call.html

I'm hoping to upgrade the speakers in my spec.D very soon, possibly combined with a 3/4 channel amp (driving fronts and a sub) and a stealthbox and sub in the boot.

Looking for the right bits at the moment and deciding whether to get my own spanners out or pay through the nose for it.

Oh and I agree, the sound coming out of the crappy speakers from what should be a decent head unit is shocking isn't it..!!

First, dump those horrible front speakers.

A nice pair of high end Co-axials or components will go a long way. And is also the cheapest and biggest imrovement from the orginal setup before you lead the long merry road to what will eventually end up as a full ICE install

Tip: Once you have upgraded the fronts: Turn on the FIE mode (Front Image enchancement) on your head unit and set it at 100 to 150 Hz. This will remove the nasty mid tone/boomy colouration from the rear speakers, yet it will keep the bass. Its a nice stop gap measure 'til you upgarde the rears and add some amps, subs, DVD player.....

cheers fellas.

anyone got any recommendations for make/model?

Living in Essex, there is a large market for bass boxes with more output than the engine of the piece of crap it is in. No offense to people who like their bass that high, but I just want to pump the volume without it sounding like the car is made of tinfoil.

Go in a local shop and ask for upmarket and a lot of them think you mean you want a box.........

Also want a rough idea of cost, so I don't get my trousers taken down.

full ICE - sounds nICE (sorry ) - but what does that involve? I am not putting Xboxes in, nor an in-car cinema. Just some loud toooons.....

Hi mate

I've gone for Infintiy 6010CS components in a 1998 classic wagon. Easy to install and sound great, especially over the originals. Got them for £35 during a sale, normally around £60. I put a pair of Infinity 5022i's in the rear doors. again £30 on sale, £60-£70 full retail. Brilliant sound IMHO.

For bass, I put an alpine SWd-1600 under the passenger (wife's) seat - £80 on sale, approx £100-£120 retail. It could be just what you are after. I listen to everything from metallica to bob marley and hard house and it copes well with everything. It won't wake up the neighbours but fills the cabin really well. Seat won't go forward the whole way, but it can be removed in 30seconds if this is required. Pioneer also do a similar model.

No idea on amps sorry. I find I don't need it with a 4 x 40w stereo (how loud is yuor exhaust?), but if you do you should be able to fit it under the other seat. I got all my kit from caraudiosecurity.com - check ebay as outside of sale time their prices can be cheaper than their website!

Just shop around on line, and search these forums as there's heaps of good ideas in here if you spend the time.

BD,

I've gone ahead with mine and here are the model numbers etc of the kit I had installed:

Hertz Hi-energy HSK165 front components.
Focal Access 130 CA1 rear door replacements.
Genesis Profile 4 Ultra amp powereing rear sub and front components.
12" Hertz Hi-energy HX300 sub in a stealthbox.

The whole lot installed, with all four doors Dynamatted and a carpeted board made for the amp, along with very good quality cabling came in around the £1300 mark. All installed preofessionally and to a very high standard by Audio Concepts (B&B) in Cardiff. Excellent professional service, I would happily recommend them. Their website is Welcome to B&B Autos, vehicle audio, entertainment and customisation specialists and the guy in charge is called Waz. Very pleasant and knowledgeable bloke.

The sound in the car has been transformed. No distortion at any volume, solid bass, crystal clear vocals and mid range from the front. Although not the cheapest by a long shot, I'm very happy with the sound from my set-up now. Oh, and a small plus is that the doors clunk shut solidly like a German luxo-barge now thanks to the dynomat and should hopefully resist the car park dings a little better too...!!

Nige.

I also went for the Infintiy 6010CS component speakers with are normally about £70-90. I got them on Ebay 'Buy it Now' for approx £35 delivered next day.

You may need to make the speaker inserts out of 120mm mdf which is tricky.

Hi there,

How much space does the stealthbox take up and where does it go?

Kind regards,

Robin

Any recommendations for having this sort of install done either in Central London or the Banbury area. I don't mind travelling a reasonable distance for the right job having said that though.

Hi Robin,

It goes in the space thats on the left as you look at the car from the back as the spec.D has the water spray tank on the right. It sits between the back of the rear light and the inner arch/strut, tight up against the trim. It's normally secured by velcro which is surprisingly good, but I also put a strap in to secure it, asI drive a little too quickly on occasions.

I'll take some pics for you tomorrow and post them up.

Also consider an under-seat sub if you don't want to lose any boot space.
