Default Is fault likely to be in head unit or in car wiring

A problem has just started happening with my stereo system. The front left speaker seems to crackle and pop alot and intermittently works, goes quiet, then goes very loud.

Loose connection I hear you say but I have checked the wires that plug into the speaker and they are fine. I have not checked the wires at the back of the head unit but it has one of those plugs with about 20 wires that just plugs straight into the car wiring (ie not individual connections for each speaker).

The thing that makes me think it might be the head unit is that the speaker plays louder than it should. Even with the volume turned down to 3 it will play loudly and also make very loud popping and crackling noises. And also, with the FAD turned all the way to the rear speakers, I can still hear some popping and crackling coming from the front left, especially when you turn the stereo on and off.

It is a cheapish head unit (JVC) that is around 3 years old.

Anybody had experience like this?

Question

I'd be inclined to swap that speaker for the other front one, and see if the problem swaps sides. It sounds like a voice-coil problem.

Rule that out, and it's 99% certain to be the headunit.

The volume level issues suggest to me its HU, even though most problems do turn out to be wiring related!
