Suggestions for Double Din Head Unit
Hi,
I am looking to upgrade the headunit in my 03 WRX and wanted peoples opions on what to replace it with, was looking at the Kenwood DDx6029 or DPX701U.
I know the front speakers will need replacing as well to make the sound much better.
Let me have your thoughts.
Cheers

What are peoples feelings on converting to single din.
I think I would rather keep the double din set up, been looking at a JVC KW-AVX706. Has anyone got one of these?
Thanks for your replys.

I've been looking at that kenwood double din unit and a few others , only thing really holding me back is the [lack of] security factor .
My old car (2003 Sti Type UK-hence the user name) had the subaru double din sized unit but that was/is not what I would have classed as desirable to scumbag thieves so never worried me.
On all my other cars i've had Alpine units where the face plate comes off, at least giving me a sort of confidence that its not worth the hassle of them breaking in and having it away.
Is there a way of 'hiding' the front of them like a cover or something, although they are security coded it wont stop a ******** car robber smashing a window, tearing up the dash and removing a useless unit.
Its my birthday today so could justify one of them with the missus!

Been on the phone to Audio 66 of Crawley he claims that they are a bolt in and so bolt out so the average **** with a brick and a ASBO would not both or just take the whole car!!!!!!!!!

I gotta say, the security aspect is putting me off one of those kenwoods.
Ideally I'd like one of the flip out kenwoods but the price is more than I want to pay because as people have said in the past, you'll end up doing speakers the next week if not sooner.
Then there might be amps and all sorts and I don't want to go down that road again

Yea its just the whole temptation thing, when he picks a brick up to put through the window he isnt bothered if it is bolted in, and if it takes too long to tear the dash board up and unscrew it he'll just run away
leaving a lovely big bill for the owner!

fwiw,I installed mine yesterday
...ok ok,so I'm no photographer
First impressions are very good, particularly the sound quality.I was a bit worried about that after a Nak.
Installation was pretty straight fwd, altho I did elongate the holes in frame(from the car)to make the unit sit slighty further back and flush with the facia...
...minor inevitable scuffs to the interior were buffed out wiv a bit of black boot polish afterwards
Slighty concerned about the radio reception at the moment tho,I've double checked the arial connections etc,but seem to remember an old Kenwood I had could only get BBC FM stations...anyone got any ideas?

Still worried about the security aspect though.
In answer to your question about radio reception. I seem to remember in the past some kenwood tuners didn't like aerial amplifiers fitted to some cars.
Try pressing the 'local' button (if kenwoods still have that) if its better then its coz the subaru amp is more powerful than the unit likes.
I think thats right But might be bow locks

I've got the Kenwood 6029 double din in mine, great piece of kit.
I had an Alpine single din before and this Kenwood sounds better to me. I still have the original speakers in too (although with the addition of a sub in the boot) sounds good to me.
I was also a bit worried about the security but have a look in most modern cars and so many have a double din screen in as standard now.
It is bolted to the dash pretty well too.

I've just had a DDX6029 fitted. I got it from an eBay powerseller but I spoke to him and ordered it over the phone. Got it for £440 delivered - the guy was pretty clued up on ICE.
I was concerned about the security but to be honest it looks pretty much factory fitted so the scum might give it a miss?!!
It sounds loads better than the original headunit. I have a pair of Vibes installed as I did most of the budget with the new HU - they sound great.....except at highish volume when both front and rear door cards rattle

With the Kenwood - does it have the speed volume control. ie: when going faster does the volume increase, and quiter when slowing down (other than manually turning it down obviously) - just wondered if this was already in the "wiring loom" and it was just the standard stereo that doesn't offer this.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Kenwood are releasing 3 new double din units this year. They all look just like the 6029, but have high speed iPod interfaces, some a hard drive and lots of other toys.

Still tempted by one of these. Especially as they've come down in price so much.
I've just got a company mobile phone so I need to get the car kit fitted which means I have to make my mind up pretty quickly cause of the bluetooth kit.
