Or can anyone remember what make/model of car stereo fits the following description.

Single din
Flip/slide down facia which reveals oversized display.
Buttons/controls on the lower sliding out section.
To remove unit, lower section slides/flips back up to show its back and only a thin section of this is removed leaving the remainder of the unit intact and a 'blank' looking plate.

I have no idea what make but they were available 'new' about 4-5 years ago-ish.

Sounds like a Kenwood Mask
but sony and, iirc, pioneer also had similar headunits that folded down or slid out.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly with full details mate

 

reminsd me of a SOny a mate had a few years back, the fold down section had one, or a couple of large silver buttons on it and the display was black backed with silver writing ( blocky at times?)
