Custom boot installs
Am thinking of starting a project in my boot, the thing that I need advice on is the finish I want to have.
I wanted to smooth over all the install and have it proffesionally sprayed the same colour/finish as the car itself, now what would you use to cover the wooden framework and boxs in?
Also has anyone got any pics of something similar thats been done before.
Cheers

to cover them mate, i'd use fibreglass and get it nice and smooth otherwise it will show up all the imperfections.
If you can wait till tuesday then i'll post up pics of mine coz i get it back from having mine done professionally.
Very reasonable for the work i'm having done and you'll see on tuesday - for a sneek preview there is a post in this forum for the box.
Mine's getting covered in vinyl though (they do various colours aswell)

vinyl would be a better option imo, paint is easy to crack when put onto boot installs (especially in a car like an Impreza when driven hard) unless you use the flexible stuff that you can get, but thats expensive in comparison

Can paint crack, I will be using 2 12" JLAudio subs so a fair bit of bass is expected

you WILL end up with lines where the joins are in the MDF with paint, i have never seen a painted install where it hasn't happened, it's the non treated edges, the paint will soak in even when you prime you will see it. Mind you if you put enough paint on you will prob be able to hide it eventually.
i have seen painted installs crack especially if you use filler, it's not so much the bass ( 2 x JL 12's is to be applauded though ) but the movement of the car, and yes i know that Subaru's are structually quite stiff but even the smallest bit of movement is going to cause you issues. But having said all that i have seen them that havn't cracked as well, i guess it's just luck of the draw at the end of the day.
Vinyl will not crack. It can be hard to work with but experience see's it ok, same with pretty much anything really, what it is good for is hiding nasty bits to save you from doing the whole pannel again which you wont get away with if you paint it.
You can with vinyl get different finishes by adding carpet first, you get softer edges etc and a puffy sort of look, if you put it straight on the MDF then it looks smoother and harder edged.
I'd say it's prob worth a look at you local ICE specialist and gauge their opinion's, see if you can see the difference in their own gallery (they are bound to have one)
Good luck

thanks for the input guys, keep it coming.
I think as suggested I will go to an ice specialist, just wanted to do the work myself and avoid paying huge bills

where do you hail from cookie???
if you are good at the wood work then you'll only incur (sp?) the cost of trimming.
Mine is in a few bits so it can be removed if it needs to be to access the powercaps and the fuse blocks. Also handy if one part gets damaged!!!!
I'll put the pics up tuesday afternoon so you can see for self mate although the sub is hidden behind the rear seats (hence the pic in the other thread)
whichever specialist you go to find out what they will charge and how long it will take - most of the good ones charge by the day like caraudioinnovations.co.uk (where mine is getting done)
