Default Alpine Users-What have you set your time delay and crossovers at?

Hi,
I have just bought a new car and it is fitted with an Alpine 7893R. I have been fiddling with the crossovers and time delay functions and now it sounds terrible.
What have you guys set them at?
The car is an 02 STI
Thanks
Dan

Okay, I'd need to know more about your set-up before talking cross-overs etc - do you have separate amplifiers, or is it using the head unit and some door speakers etc.?

If you've got 'speakers in the standard places (i.e. door mounted) then you could try these delays to start you off. I'm pretty tall, so these distances are right for me, but they shouldn't vary too much between people.

I measured the following ear to 'speaker distances:

FR = 96mm
FL = 138mm
RR = 70mm
RL = 124mm

The FL (front left) was furthest away, so this wasn't delayed at all.

FR was calculated to need a 1.22ms delay, which was a delay of 12 on my Alpine 9812.

RL needed a delay of 0.408ms (delay = 4).

RR needed a delay of 1.98ms (delay = 20).

These figures give me a great stereo image in the centre of the dash, something I've never had in a car before. Of course, it's rubbish for my passengers though (like I care!).

If you've not got separate amps, I'd recommend setting all EQs etc. to flat before you start adjusting again.

Wish I had a sub ; be great to take the 'weight' off the door speakers. I've got some dynamat to fit, just haven't got round to it yet (hate taking off the door cards; the plastic latch surround bit is a pain).

What sub(s) and amp do you have?

I fitted my Rockford Sub and amp in the boot of my MY03 STi and with that taking the bass I am now reconsidering changing the door speakers as they sound much better than they did before with no distortion at all. A bit of sound proofing is required in the boot but other than that i am well pleased with the result.

(running an Alpine 9815 by the way)

I always found it better to have a higher crossover point for the fronts (don't know why but it always sounds better to me) i use 80hz for the sub & 150hz for the front speakers.

Got to get yourself a sub, once you take the bass away from the front speakers they sound 100% better (even the standard ones).

Thanks for all the advise,it sounds much better now!
Next job is to whip off a door card and see if the previous owner was kind enough to fit me some good speakers to go along with the expensive headunit and changer that he kindly installed. If not I will have to attempt to fit the Infinity 6500cs's that I took out of my classic.Am I right in thinking that I will need two 12mm spacers for each speaker on an 02 model?

Well I have 2 amps, one for the mids/tweeters and one for my sub.

My mids are the infinity cs6000, the sub is a 10" Rockford HX2 in a self made fibreglass enclosure.
the amps are Phoenix gold QX180.2 and 900.1.

Had quite a pleasant surprise when I pulled off the door card!! I was greated by miles of Dynamat extreme on both the inner and outer door skins and quite a tasty looking set of JL Audio components.He had also made some really good mdf spacers and it was all topped off with nice thick speaker cable.The only slight downside is that the speakers are only 5.25 rather than 6 inch. Will it be worth removing these speakers and replacing them with the Infinity 6500cs's I have already got or will the difference be very small?
