yep got one in my wrx. limited controls but still handy. you can just get a cable rather than a dock so you can stash it in the glovebox or something.
got a few teething probs but new software may resolve. easy to fit as well

Does the cable include charging or is it just the docking station? What can you actually do from the head unit? Can you scroll the artists by alphabet

no you cant scroll by artist from the headunit. you can select playlists and play them on random. you can disconnect the ipod and select album and then skip tracks through the head unit. can select playlist browser also
not sure on charging with cable only. will check web

i got the alpine with ipod control (i forget the model number its in the car lol) although i wont pretend to have masted the damn thing.. its a def must have! if u ask me! far easier then picking ya fav tracks or albums.. just take ur whole collection on with u
can scroll by album, artist or folder.. or just use playlists *which i tend to do.. also it charges at the same time.. One thing i did notice (although summers coming now HOPEFULLY) on very cold mornings it takes a while for the ipod work as its bloody frozen (nothing a blast of the heaters cant fix tho)

I presume by 'alpine' you mean a dedicated HU...How much was it and did the ipod just plug straight in?

I've also gone for the Alpine set up and would definitely recommend it. The iPod just plugs into a controller box which then plugs into the headunit. This allows the iPod to be fully controlled via the head unit. If you've got an iPod and want to use it in your car then this has got to be the way to go.
I paid £299 for a CDA-9830R and iPod controller from Bass Junkies.
