Default problems fitting kenwood headunit

Afternoon all
Just been swaping the philips headunit for my kenwood one in my scooby my97. Everything ok until I come to fit the black plastic rectangular surround that goes around the front of the unit. This should just snap on, but it won't - seems there physically isn't enough room for it. On first impressions it seems there isn't enough depth to allow it to fit. Any one else enountered this and knows how to overcome it without cannabilising the surround.
Nick

I think so - replaced the cradle but made sure this was flush and solid. Headunit slide it in and clicked into place. All fine except when I come to fit the surround it won't click into place. The only way I can see to get it to fit is to move the headunit forward a few mm but this would compromise security.

You have it fitted right, you can not fit the surround without cutting the facia.

I have a kenwood MD headunit and MD changer slave, both come with the plastic surround, yet I could not fit them as shown below.

Best thing to do I found was position the face of the unit so it sits flush with the opening.

Fitted to MY98.

Cheers - so fit w/o the surround? This will leave the bare metal of the case showing on mine - not nice - it's not hidden by plastic like you appear to have.

I have recently changed the head unit in my MY03 for a Kenwood mask jobbie, after having bought a new black surround I've discovered that as the thread says, there is no way of fitting the head unit with this surround.
I have therefore got a head unit with the metal exposed - lovely!!
I believe that Alpine head units don't have this problem?

No the alpine units do have this problem too. I had to leave the surround off on my '95 sti. The good thing is that you don't see the exposed metal very well.

Are these the NEW Kenwood H/U's that are in question, I've fitted several of the old units with no problems.
