Question Double Din Audio help please ..

Hi ,

Looking to replace the Double Din unit in the Scoob WITHOUT going down the single Din route , is there any dissadvantages in buying a unit from America ie the FM radio not working ? I was looking at this at a Sony unit ..

http://store.yahoo.com/discave/wxsoncarster.html

There doesn't seem to be any good outlets , pricewise , for Double Din units ..

Any recommendations ?

The reason I dont want to go down the Single Din route is I dont like the space left / pocket which I have , and cant afford to fill it with something else !!

Cheers ,

Steve

Have you seen the silver cubby hole with a flap over the front that comes in the Forester? You can fit that under a single-DIN unit and many people prefer it to the plain black, open box that's designed for the Impreza.

There are lots of Double DIN units on the market, the US is defo not the place to look, rather have a look at the japanese sites (Sony, Panasonic, Eclipse, Pioneer etc).
If you can find your way through don't look at the official prices, as in reality ,ost car shops over thee sell them for half the price.

Myself I have a Panasonic CQ-VX7700D radio, CD and Minidisc double DIN unit and recently I fitted an FM expander (lots of those available on ebay right now for a very fait price) to be able to listen to more than 1 radio station.

Definitively makes your interior look better than a single DIN with a piece of black plastic underneath.

The radio may not tune to some UK stations, those ending in odd numbers normally e.g. 98.5. You also won't get RDS. Otherwise it should be OK.

True, Jap and US radios have different station spacings (Hz steps) so the radios will not work well in the UK.
I would stick to a UK double Din unit.

Default Oh well ..

Thanks everyone for your replies ..

The main trouble is I'm not impressed by what seems to be the only 2 available on the UK market ( a Pioneer that's ugly as sin and a Clarion that looks SO 1990's ). Yes there might be 1 or 2 available from a Subaru dealer , but are they any better than the ones fitted standard ??

Cheers ,

Steve

Talking

US radios use .02 mhx off the UK frequency so do not buy US unless you plan to drive the car there, I stupidly tried this once for the Mrs when i was in the US on business, what a waste of money !!! Could only get long wave.

by the way the top notch Sony fitted in the Mondeo ST220 fits in the dash superbly and is fin ace.

Default Single Din

Stevo

I was like you looking all over for a decent double din size head unit but after seeeing a mates american spec stereo I changed my mind straight away, can you imagine how annoying it is never being able to exactly tune into your local radio station and you dont get any of the RDS!! or station recognise features!

Just go for the Pioneer DEH 7500 or 7600 it matches the dash and illuminates green, it fits in really easily with the forrester pocket, and in my opinion it looks great and i am a fussy sod!!

Just an idea but its a fab stereo and looks great too!!
