I'm after some new rear speakers for my classic does anyone have any recommendations please? How easy is it to fit 6x9's??

dont know if you are anywhere near blackburn but a place called base systems just fitted my 6 x 9`s on friday. they mounted them underneath using an mdf thing covered with dynamat then carpeted. look really neat from in boot and just has standard speaker grills on shelf when you look through the window. cost £80 but i had my own 6 x 9`s.

I am going to get 17 cm Sony XSF 1731(?) 3-way speakers for a straight drop in later this week - any comments?

I put some Pioneer 6x9's in the rear shelf and have to say it was a real pig! The speakers could not be dropped in from the top as they were too big so I had to attach them from underneath. It was a real pig to get them lined up equally and fixed and the metal work is showing from the bottom but on the plus side the sound is fantastic.


If you want some photos then let me know and I can mail them to you. Moral of the story, check what speakers fit very carefully beofre purchasing (something I did not do!)

The spec of mine are Sony XS-F1731 3-way 180W Peak and the size is 16.5 cm.
I think this should drop straight in where the standards come out.
They appear to be a good compromise - power and size and are going to cost me £39.99 from the high street.
I have heard that 6x9's can be fitted into the front doors "fairly" easily and may be my next step (2 screws and high strength glue to door frame- ie no cutting or remoulding of door panel required).

Can anyone confirm my thoughts?

Ok, so i bought them - and they don't fit.
The speakers would fit fine, but the Sony grill (which i want to put in) is smaller than the standard subaru one, which means that the holes from the current grill will show around the edge of the new one.
Anyone got any ideas?
One thing i thought of was that the speaker size is 16.5 cm. Would 17 cm be a better fit???

A place near me in Chesterfield says they can fit 6x9's in the back by carefully widening the holes in the metal strip under the shelf.....I'll let you know how much success they have on sunday!

I got some Alpine 6x9s for my classic rears, they didn't fit too well and I wasn't happy with the gaps and sound vibration from the trim, so I swapped them for a set of Infinity Reference speakers - 16.5cm I think. Easy to fit (except that the screws near the back are a bu99er to get in cos of the glass) and I was able to use the Infinity grilles, which are slightly smaller than OE.

How did you fit them - from above (ie pull up the standard grill) or from underneath (ie take all apart)?

Yeah, i just removed them from above and they slotted right in!

The grilles need a bit of jiggling to cover the holes left by the std grille.
You'll know what I mean when u get to do it!

I used the same speakers for the front doors too...

Chesterfield car audio just fitted my pioneer TSA-6910 330w 6x9's in the back of my saloon, they cut a couple of holes in the actual shelf, slightly widened the metal holes underneath and mounted the speakers ontop of 18mm mdf spacers. Running the speakers through a pioneer p77mp head unit and no word of a lie it sounds so much like a sub its unreal, I can't quite believe the bass I'm getting compared to when I had the setup in my last car! Looks proper tidy aswell, if anyone lives in the derbyshire/ south yorks area u should check them out! Cost about £44 to fit not including the speakers
