Im guessing this has already been asked before but can any one advice me on what to do in view of changeing the existing head unit, i dont want to get one thats half the size new one, so ideally would like one that just fills the gap perfect, i have noticed that sgt my local dealer do a upgrade headunit does any one know if this is a lot better then the standard one?

I ftted this to mine and have a useful pod underneath. You can get a super fit from the Forester or even invest in a PSI screen for your ECU readout! Either way this Alpine Sat Nav kit is very good especially linked to an amp.

One of the obvious double din upgrades is the Kenwood DDX7025

I have been in contact with a few people and have been adviced that the best way around this prob is to install a standard size head unit and add a shelf under neath, has any one done this or heard of this being done. apparently this comes in a kit.

Thats what most people do. Have a look through this forum - its been covered loads of times. Your options are either an open pocket, a blanking plate, or a popular choice is to use the pocket from a Forester which has an opening flap on it. Another alternative is to put a CD changer in the gap - this might limit your head unit options - I think Blaupunkt do one - maybe others.
In any case its dead easy to do

Today I have changed the stock double DIN Kenwood head unit in my Outback H6 for a Blaupunkt Woodstock DAB 52, used a Forester DIN pocket (no flap) to fill the hole beneath. Might not apply to an Impreza but I had to buy an aerial extension lead 1m (0.5 would have done) as the FM / AM aerial input on the Kenwood is a flying lead.

Roo4NFG:
I understand that Alpine are the best, but I bought a Sony, they seem to come with a free remote and are very good in my opinion, Daughter bought a pioneer and it can deal with MP3 and also WMA only cost her about £150.00 and sounds nice.
Get one with a bass line output, you will find this handy if you buy a sub later.
Alpine’s are difficult to find discounted, but a good deal on a Sony or Pioneer and you are laughing.
I went for the Sony, see Sticky: ICE Forum Purpose and FAQ - read before posting because it was on offer for £202.00 and looked part of the design of the console.
