Removing door trim for new REAR SPEAKERS, MY04
Hello all.
I know that rear speakers get a mixed press, but I've got some nice Infinity 10cm ones cheap for my MY04 STI.
Has anyone removed the trim & changed these??
The FAQ covers replacing rears in the classic Impreza, but not new-age.
Never seen a classic, but I assume their rear speakers are in the parcel shelf as opposed to the doors.
Please let me know which bits to do first before I start yanking plastic & breaking stuff!
Thanks in advance,
Colin.

The rear cards are removed by:
- first, remove the single plastic screw on the side above the locking mechanism
- remove the handle
- er, pop the card off.
I think that's right
Cheers,
Nick.

holes in the back arnt round so you have to mess about to get them to fit, i ended up putting kenwoods, in as all the infinity's have the tweater on the front and that stops the door panel going back on.

....just fiddling about at the moment....
Looks like the Infinity Kappa 42.5i's are going to be a perfect fit with no jiggery-pokery.....
chiark, do you think this (relatively simple) instruction (for rear door trim removal on a new age) could be added to the FAQ above?? Just a thought, as more & more new imprezas get sold, & more people like myself buy one & want a quick fix to give a slightly better sound (as opposed to a £2-5k custom build)....
Will post details of the 4.25i install (angle grinder & bandsaw at the ready!)

And it doesn't seem to be the clearance on the door trim due to the sticking out tweeter.... I've stuck a couple of washers behind the screw holes, and it's fine.... Trim goes back on; magnet no where near the door skin.
But the spacing of the mounting holes.... TOTALLY wrong!! Even with the mounting rings supplied with the Infinitys.
I think the simplest solution will be to butcher the OEM speaker mounts.... and I mean REALLY butcher them, so that they are only a plastic ring (removing all the stuff round the back)
That, plus my washers, should make a perfect fit.
Then I need to decide where the hell to put the crossovers: I can't believe the amount of water inside the door!!
Will post once I have met with success!!!!

Cheers, BAH.
Will be doing that tomorrow.... Also have some MDF & jigsaw at the ready just in case!
Out of curiosity, did you notice any water in your rear doors when you had them apart? Did you put any waterproofing behind the speakers?

*phew*
Well, butchering the OEM mounts just seemed too much.....
....so I cut a couple of template discs from 6mm plywood......
Speaker screwed into back of disc, disc screwed into front of hole in door.....
fits pretty well..... about 1mm clearance between the "protuding" tweeters and the door trim grille when reinstalled.
Still sound crap, as waiting for new head unit!! Brighter though (as would expect with 2-way coaxes)
FINAL VERDICT: It probably wasn't worth the hassle. If I did another Scoob, I'd just leave the rear speakers disconnected, and spend the extra money on better quality front components. Or butcher the parcel shelf & fit good 6x9s with an amp if you wanted a fuller sound.
Just forget about the rears; they really aren't worth the hassle!
