What Size Amp to compliment new speakers?
Car = MY00 STi6 TypeR
My car currently has standard component speakers in the front and empty holes in the rear shelf. Head Unit is CD/Tuner Kenwood Double din.
Just bought new speakers for improved sound:-
Fronts = Infinity 6000cs 6" Components rated at 90w RMS/270W Peak. These came with tweeters which I will mount next to wing mirrors
Rears = Infinity 6002i 6" Coaxial rated at 60w RMS/180w peak.
Question. I need a 4-channel amp to get the best out of these. Can anyone advise what I need to go for?
In the long run I may put a small sub in the boot and run it off the amp along with the front speakers and leave the rears running off the head unit for rear ambience.
What do you think?
thanks
Nick

make sure your amp is more capable than the speakers in terms of power - overdriving a speaker is no where near as bad for it as over driving the amp and it clipping it's output, this will **** your tweeters way quick.

Any decent brand amp putting out 4x75 watt would be my choice. Phoenix Gold and Soundstream would be my first port of call - both have an amp that'd do well. I have experience of the soundstream 604, and the PG M44 (a mate's). Both amps are old, but will last forever providing they've not been physically abused.
Cheers,
Nick.

normal advice I would give is as big (current) as possible to fit your budget of course.
The distortion figures of amps tend to increase as the gain does. A mighty amp on low gain will be far less strained, and this will normally translate into smoothness.
the 604 is nice I can confirm that from first hand experience, the M44 also does a good job, but doesn't have massive ***** as it were. I would see what you can do about getting a ZX450 as these are the most versatile of the PG range for the money they fetch these days. They are also very smooth yet powerful when called upon.

Agreed- you cannot go wrong with the ZX450. There's one on ebay at the moment, but I'd be a bit suspicious about it: it's a black one (seller claims a "limited edition", which is ***** - they were available as black or white) and all the photos are of a white one which suggests the photos are not his...
Cheers,
Nick.

Thanks guys, ZX450 sounds good - hope its not made by Sinclair or Kawazaki though!
Chiark, thanks to you too. Can't believe I got an answer from the ICE Legend!

I've looked at various ICE internet stores but can't find the amps that you recommend.
Do you know where I can find these? Hope they're not megabucks - I just want to end up with a medium range system.
Just thought, I'm gunna have to get Dynamat and leads too!!

going to the us anytime soon? know anyone coming here from there willing to carry an amp for ya?
I got a Phoenix Gold Octane 9.0:5 (4 x 75W RMS + 1 x 250 (for the sub, that you'll want later) for under £200.
Cheapest price here was £450!

I wouldn't bother with the rear speakers at all. Get a sub and remove the rears. You'll find the soundstage much better.
The only reason I can see for rear speakers is if you only ever sit in the back of the car!
You want the sound where YOU are (i.e. the drivers seat) and rears just mess that up.
If you get a sub then removing the rears will allow more bass into the cabin.
Just my 2p's worth!
