To port or not to port??
Mt mates thinking of creating a port hole in the shelf of his Impreza turbo (Saloon not Wagon).
Any of you guys recommend cutting a hole between the current (standard) 5.25inch speakers.
He's got a single Rockford 15 sub lying around he wants to make use of but not have just the bootlid and numberplate rattle.

First off, 15s are a tight fit in the boot of an impreza but can be done.
Cutting metal on the rear shelf is a bad, bordering on stupid, idea. Metal is there to hold the car together, and you can put quite a bit of load through the car in the twisties (TM)
The numberplate rattle can be stopped, but it's more likely to be somethiing in the bumper assembly. To stop it, be prepared to take the bumper off and pack stuff out as needed.
The bootlid needs a good dynamatting.
The spoiler is a complete sod to stop rattling - I never managed it

So how do you suggest getting the bass into the cabin?
It seems rather pointless having the 15 isolated in the boot. I think the rattle from the bootlid and no. plate are the least of his worries. He just want some of that sound in the cabin...is there a ski hatch on those cars or somewhere else the sound can get thru to the cabin?
You can tell i'm a novice when it come to Scoobies!

Getting bass into the cabin of a scoob is easy: buy a wagon
More seriously, it is a difficult challenge. Some go for the extreme force route, chucking a hell of a lot of power into a good lot of subwoofer... Others go the metal cutting route, which I think is plain wrong. If your seats can open, that's a good but rather impractical way of getting sound in.
A very simple solution is to remove the rear speakers completely, as you don't really need 'em. That has in the past managed to get a bit more sound into the cabin.
Hope this helps somewhat.
Nick.

Had a 15" rockford in my boot(MY00 classic) for 15 months until it went POP, both voice coils fried, yes a Rockford 2215 in a 2.5CuFt ported to 33Hz box, it sounded fantastic really deep powerful bass. I removed my rear speakers to allow the air flow from the boot into the cabin, don't like the cutting metal bit. Now got an old MTX thunder 5000 as a temp, sounds crap, whilst i'm waiting for my RE SX12 sub to arrive, can't wait to hear this sub ,apparently there amazing!!,gotta make a new box first though.

Cheers Lea, I'll look forward to that. Know what you mean about funds right now - my son is 9 months old and the wife isn't back at work, which has rather changed the family budget!

Cheers Chiark...
I'll fwd this to him. In a nutshell: No more holes!
I think he's going to have to rethink where he's gonna put his components now that the rear shelf holes are spoken for.
