My better half's 03WRX has the worst standard stereo in the world & I understand my WR1 won't be much better (if not the same!) so I was wondering if I needed to change just the head unit & keep the existing speakers or do I need a major ICE transplant?

The speakers are pants, change them and put in a decent HU. If it's single din you can buy either an open pocket or a pocket with a flap on it the originates from the forester. Chances are you will need an ISO adapter as well.

Ditch the rears and replace the front speakers with some decent components.
Get a new HU
Get an amp to power the new speakers

As a minimum.

how spooky is this 30 mins ago I asked a snr bod in my company if he was enjoying his new scooby company car. He said yes apart from stereo and speakers. He told me that after complaining about the speakers and having to demo the fact they were crap to a Subaru rep, Subaru are now looking to change the units that are supplied with the cars

remarkable! we've been complaining for years and a guy in your company gets them to change just like that !

Seriously, they will need to change the speaker supplier, alter the shape of the door cards and add sound deadening as a minimum.....changing the HU will do not a great deal...
