Active Noise - does it exist?
Hi,
Many years ago Lotus were developing noise-cancelling for cars using the car stereo. Are there any commercially available units yet, maybe fitted to car stereos? Basically like the Bose noise-cancelling headphones, but for the whole car.
My Scoob is so noisy that I can't hear the car phone kit (Panasonic GD-87 and Panasonic full car-kit) at anything over 50mph!
It's an STi7 with PPP and Prodrive springs. Everyone on the phone keeps telling me to shut the window!
Alternatively are there any low-tech solutions that help, the main problem seems to be wind noise.

I know what you mean, they where trying to develop it also for tinatus suffers by producing a signal at 180 degrees phase to the ringing they have in the ears to cancel it out, but heard nothing about it being available yet for this or for car purposes.

You don't have the microphone air vent mounted and the fan turned on, I hope?
Low tech - fit a "tie clip" and/or direction microphone on the car kit? Much closer to your voice, or maximum gain when pointing at your mouth, so you'll get better pick up of the signal compared to the noise.
Very low tech - if you've got high wind noise are you sure the windows are sealing properly? Try opening slightly and re-closing the window after you get in - the bugeyes are prone to windows not sealing well. That will make a significant difference to wind noise.

The problem is phasing. It works brilliantly if you sit perfectly still. If you move, you move with respect to the sound field and you could find the background noise being augmented by the noise cancelling!

Thanks for replies, gave up looking after 8 days of no replies!
Chiark.
Thought positioning would be a problem, that's why the headphones work.
Hades
Mike is fitted by rear view mirror. Have opened and shut windows to no effect. General car noise is very high at over 40-50 MPH, hard for callers to hear me, and for me to hear them. If I slow down or stop in traffic during a call, they all say "that's better, what happened!"
Are there any noise reduction kits for the Impreza and do they work? Anyone fitted one?
What effect (if any noticeable) does the extra weight have on performance?
Thanks.
