Will be taking delivery of a MY99 4 door. I am a real music fan and want to fit the best hifi I can afford into the beast.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

You should be able to get a reasonable set-up for that money, depends on what you want/prefer or how much room you want to lose.

I will begin to transplant my system from my BMW across in the near future, 1,300 Watts RMS (about 3,000 Watts peak apparantly).

Alpine Head unit & 12 disc boot loader, High quality cables and terminations throughout, 2 x JL Audio 10" Subs Boston Pro and Boston Rallye speakers, Kenwood 8" bass speakers, Kenwood active crossover, All Kenwood Amps.

Most of this kit will not fit without serious loss of space which I don't want to do, it will be a smaller less complicated system, so if I hit any snags I will post them.

I'm picking mine up tomorrow after a quick install of some old equipment I had in my last car - I'll let you know how it sounds...

Inifinity Kappas all-round
Couple of Alpine V12s
Pioneer KEH-8400 + changer
Pioneer DEQ-9200
Pioneer RB20 -> Portable Minidisc in centre console!

Should sound pretty good! The biggest problem I had was getting power from the battery to the boot - there weren't any spare grommets or anywhere I could find to route the cables into the cabin (98 WRX).

I think that if you really want to get the most out of the music, you have to fit a sub! I did the Audio in my Scooby in stages, first the Head Unit and Changer, then decent component mids and tweeters all round.
Then I added a 5 channel amp which enabled me to power all the speakers and the sub.

I have since added another amp to go with the sub, and it sounds awesome!

You will notice the difference, with and without the sub as I find that the music loses all of the low bits. You don't have to play 'dance' music to get the best out of a sub, just listen to Hotel California off of the Hell Freezes over Album by the Eagles. The punch from the kickdrum is only noticeable with a sub and it gives you a real concert feeling!

If you have that kind of money to spend, then may I suggest some of the following:-

Rockford Fosgate Fanatic X (FNX1614) 6.5" Mids & 0.75" Tweeters.

Rockford Fosgate Punch 150a2 Amp

Either JL Audio or Rockford Fosgate Punch Subs (10" for punch, or 12" for punch and a good hold on the low notes.)

Sounds like a decent set-up, how much space did you have to sacrifice?

My installer is planning on building a custom sub box behind the seats in the boot with either on or both of the JL Audio (10W6) speakers from my old system. Amps behind the side compartment panels with additional ventilation.

All space saving suggestions welcome, It just wouldn't be complete without a sub!

I've recently put in the following :
Alpine 1505 Head Unit
Alpine 6-disc changer
Alpine 4x70RMS Amp
Alpine 1x300RMS Amp
Alpine 10" Sub
Subworx fibreglass box
Ltd Edition JBL 6x9 in rear
Cliff Designs Components up front.

Sounds Ace !

The subworx box is moulded to fit the drivers side rear of the boot and I've got my amps on the other side. This still leaves room for 2 large suitcases !

Had fun with getting the components to fit - 5ml clearance to glass, 2ml clearance to door panel !

As most people I have Alpine Head unit with Alpine 6 Disc CD changer
Kef mid/tweeters front
Mission mid/tweeters rear
Driven by Calibre amplifier

2x JL 12in Subwoofers each seperately driven by Rockford Fosgate Amps.
Awesome sound.
You can install using a baffle board which will hide your subs and amps and also have space for suitcases in the boot.

Many places will sell ex-demo units to help you keep within budget or build the system in stages as and when you feel.
