For 500 quid, spend 300 quid on a head unit, and 100+ on speakers. Fit it yourself and you're laughing.

General rule of thumb, at least

The standard head unit is dire, and the speakers are almost, but not quite, as bad.

Cheers for the info.

...but, do you mean replace the door speakers and rear parcel speakers? Are there tweeters in uper front doors? Any recommendations on decent head units around £300?

Replace fronts only. There are speakers in the rear which are adequate to keep rear passengers happy...

There are tweeters in the front of your car, but they're not up to much. Replacing the whole lot is the best bet.

Cheers,
Nick.

Yeh change all four speakers

Head Unit Go for Alpine/Sony/Pioneer these are good and have all the extra's so you can upgrade later i.e add subs and amps etc!
Personally i even paid £450 for a nakamichi cd head unit and my £300 Alpine was far better for extra's and sound quality - i think it was a pay for the name job!!!!
Its all down to personal taste upon looks - all makes at around the £300 will do pretty much the same job!

As for changing only the fronts as nick states, you will need to fade the sound to the front as to hear them being louder and better.
I think it would be wiser to get all four in the end, it will sound far better IMHO
As for tweeters in the front, if you have any they will be on the plate behind where the door mirror sits (usually)thats on my my93 classic if you got new shape cant help ya!!

As for

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

Had a look at a couple of sites and visited a retailer - what's the bucket shop apprach all about 'should be £££££ our price £££' yet all seem to discount same models within a few quid??

Anywhere genuinely offer good products at good prices?

Thumbs up

Just ordered an Alpine 9815 from dabs.com for 300 quid - normal street price seems to be 350-ish and bass-junkies 325...

agree re sony.

on her standard golf set up, my girlfriend fades 11/14 to the rear.

Prefers sound that way!

Forget about imaging, what about the fact that you can't hear the fronts!

Ordered a Pioneer DEH-P77MP last night from MCS direct for £247
Add an autoleads iso adaptor pc-2-44-4 at £10 gives you £260 ish.

Halfords wanted £399!! just for the headunit £150 more.

That leaves you with £240 for a nice set of components for the front, you can amp it up at a later date and add a sub.
