My unit is a KDC-M4524
Im looking at putting a laptop in my boot with a small TFT etc etc etc... and obviously im gonna be using my stereo aux inputs for sound.
The phono connectors in the back are, in the manual, marked as static rear speaker output (ie. amps), but when i pluged a portable cd player in there, it played audio outa the back speakers when the stereo is in Tuner mode, but, obviously, its no good with the radio playing over the top. and there is no Aux option in the sources.
is there anyway around this? is it possible to use the CD Changer AUX in?

I have the same model Kenwood. As far as I know, the CD changer input can only be used for Kenwood CD changers .... but this isn't my specialist subject.
Page 8 of the manual lists the sources as "Tuner", "CD", "External disc (optional accessory)", "Auxiliary input (optional accessory)" and "Standby".
Page 25 of the manual does say that you can rename the "AUX1" source to "TV", "Video", "Game", "Portable" or "DVD", which is pretty cool and must mean that there is a way to do what you want.
Incidentally, do you know what the real way is to wire up the red and yellow lives as this is puzzling some of us who are losing our settings!! I'm going to have a fiddle with it tomorrow but, if you already know the answer (which Kenwood don't seem to have a clue about, giving 4 different options), then that would be useful!

I have the same problem sorta, well, it doesnt lose its settings anymore (with the default wiring) but it wont turn on with out the ignition. I posted about this a week back and got a few replies also from others... take a nose.
I might give Kenwood a call themselves and check with this also, and maybe ask about the AUX inputs, cheers.

You can get an aux input cable - CA1CX... This plugs into your cd changer input on the head unit and gives you aux in.
If you have a cd changer already, you can buy an SA-100 (I think) which allows you to connect either 2 changers, or a changer and aux input. That's what I'm using.
New changers have aux inputs built in and these should work too.
