Speaker question
Okay, so I've heard that there is not much depth available when fitting new front speakers in a MY02 WRX and that to counter this, a MDF spacer is used. Does this not cause problems when refitting the speaker grill / door card as the speaker will be more prominent? - or am I talking out of my a**e?
Also, does it make any difference in what music you listen to as to what equipment to buy?

12mm will go on there and allow you to get the door card back on. I believe others have been successful with more.
The type of music you like normally dictates how you like your music reproduced: as an example, a penchant for rock would mean you probably like a more engaging setup, slightly brighter than neutral. Dance would probably add more bass to the setup, and again a brigh treble.
I've set my system up to be neutral, and compared to some it sounds like there's a shedload of midrange in there.
Speakers make, without any doubt, the most difference to your listening assuming you've replaced the head unit and are going for a quality set up. Different brands of amp will make some difference, but speakers are what really give the most "personality" to the music.
Get a short list, spend time listening to music at home, then spend time listening to the same music in cars and go for the speakers you like the sound of.
Sorry it's not easy
. I like pretty much everything, but want something that can handle anything without sounding wrong hence the neutral stance. Some times, it would be nice to have something a little brighter, but when listening to female vocals I'm glad I made the choice I did.
Cheers,
Nick.

Aah, I see! I am trying to put together some decent sounds in the car using my old trusty Pioneer DEH 8400 head unit. What front speakers / setup would you recommend, keeping the budget pretty low? Thanks for the help!

Something American - maybe Rockford, JBL, Cerwin Vega!, ... would be worth a listen for that sorta stuff. I can nearly make my ears bleed with the Land of Rape and Honey
I'd reckon on 200 quid for front speakers, 200 quid for a 4 channel amp and 100 quid for a boxed sub, assuming you want a sub?

Can you give me an example at some fronts to pick please? I also have a 400watt active tube lying around here somewhere, so I might chuck that in too. Right, we're down to front speakers and amp!
