Chiark,
"How do you change the stereo" is a common question on this board. I've tried to help with the answer on a few threads. I've just changed mine again today (!) and, this time, I've taken pictures to go with it. If I did a little write-up, would it be of interest to you for your web site? My car is an MY96 import so it's different to both of the descriptions that your site has for the later models.
Great site by the way, Chiark - thanks for the pages about how to change the front speakers

OK Nick - no problem.
I started changing my front speakers today. Gave up after the first one as it had taken me so long that it was going to get dark before I could finish the second one! And it sounded pretty disappointing too - actually worse than the OEM speaker that was in there before. I am pretty sure that was because my 12mm MDF spacers didn't fit snugly and were certainly way off of making a nice air-tight enclosure. Incidentally, I started taking pictures of this as well because the process is slightly different in a 96 model to what you described for later models on your site.
Turns out I only took 3 photos of the head unit change but I think that's all that's needed. Anyhow, I've got to take it out AGAIN (!!) ASAP because it's somehow the first time I've ever fitted a Kenwood and I didn't know that they swap the red and yellow lives round the other way .... so it's not remembering any of my settings. Will probably do that in my lunch break during the next 3 days if it's not raining.
I'll knock something up this week and email it to you.
