went to view my new sti6 type R Limited yesterday and discovered it as NO ICE at all! not even speakers! nevermind time for some modding
ive got a kenwood mp3 head unit 4x50w
not bothered about subs
would like it a little more louder / bassier then my old standard uk turbo ice though
budget of about £500
so im thinking a 4 chanel amp?? door speakers?? 6x9's on parcel shelf?? what do you lot advise???
cheers, peccy.

I'd spend the money on decent 6" or 6.5" front speakers, a decent amp and lots of sound deadening for the front doors. add wiring, RCAs and fitting and you're probably pushing the £500 mark with that lot.
If you do it yourself you've got about £100 for rear speakers or improvements to what I've previously mentioned.
Vindaloo.

Vindaloo speaks sense
Decent speakers - 150 to 250 quid
Amp - 150 to 250 quid
Noise killing - 20 quid to 50 quid
Wiring etc - 30 quid to 100 quid
Leave the rear alone at the moment, and budget a bit in the future for a sub, or a pair of 6x9 subs like the Genesis 6x9 subs which are real subs, not just 6x9s.
A 4 channel amp now would be a good investment providing you don't have aspirations of massive bass in the future.
Cheers,
Nick.

think ill get the fronts sorted first then, what type? 2 way? 3 way? and what kind of amp?
when i get the 6x9's later, do these have to be powered by an amp? or shall i get a 2way just for the fronts?
will it sound odd with just the fronts?
SPEN555, i cant drive without my driving anthems, they must be worth an equivalent 100bhp!

Peccy you old fart, finally got tyhe car then or did you just view it? It's Av from Drby, sold my Type RA and nearly purchased the 2 door you put a deposit down on but I couldn't do it to you as I knew you were desperate to get one, hope it lives up to your expectations.
Anyway, I've got a Mk4 golf Gti Turbo now, nowhere near as quick as the scooby but the build qulaity is 500% better and my sound systems rocks.
I really wouldn't bother going for 6x9's at all unless as chiark says they are the sub type which Genesis do (I have a Genesis 5 channel amp and it's the muts)..
Stick with a good set of fronts powered by a good 4 channel amp running active, it's the way to go! if you don't want to splash all that cash then look at my Focals on sale here, they used to be in the rear quaters of my Integra but I've found no use for them in my golf. They would be fine running passive with a 2 channel amp and using the tweeter crossover.
Have fun and let me know if you want a pic of these speakers, Focal are a very good make indeed and the tweeter on these is not harsh.

heres my plan, i have a kenwood headunit 4x29rms with front and rear pre-outs and think of
FRONT: JBL GTO 6506Ce 165mm 2-way components (70w rms/210 peak) with 25mm tweater to go in door handle
REAR: JBL GTO 165mm 2-way 60w rms/180w peak
AMP: JBL GTO4000 4 channel amp - 4 x 50w @ 40hms
OR
2 x GTO2000 2 channel amps front and rear - 2 x 75w @ 40oms
as ya see from the spec im only after a basic system, does the spec sound ok and match up ok?

peccy,
Never used JBL stuff, it's not high end but then again if your not looking to spend a fortune then it should be o.k. I would still ditch the rears and put the extra money toward a better set of fronts, Focal, Diamond, DLS, etc.. and get a 4 channel amp likes of DSL or Genesis and run the fronts active, you will get a really good sound. Also budget for a few rolls of Dynamat for the front doors and ensure the spacers are MDF and not plastic.
I really would not bother with rears, just put more money towards the fronts.

Peccy,
Wot about.....
A Kenwood amp to match the h/u....
KAC7201 or KAC8401 would do the trick - £130 (ish) from MCS direct.
Two popular scoobie speaker types are Focals and Infinities.
Infinity 6000CS for £86 on MCS Direct or
Focal Polyglass 130V2 or 165V2 are around £200 (ish) on Unbeatable car audio. There's also the Access range for £130 (ish).
The bigger/deeper 6.5" speakers (Focals?) may be 'tricky' to fit without catching the window mechanism or the door cards. Probably a rule of thumb is that 6" speakers will require some fettling to fit. There's loads of threads about MDF or plastic spacers around, most of which eventually point back at Chiark's website (more sense spoken there
I was advised to fit 5" coaxial speakers in the rear to provide rear fill, though I'd leave that decision until the fronts are upgraded and run in. Install a 4ch amp or cater for another 2ch in the boot. Upgrading the rears or installing a sub. isn't a problem after that.

im about to attempt to fit my kenwood head unit tomorrow and will be lookign at amping the front door speakers that are already there. Let me know how you get on with your syetem as im sure the door speakers i have are pretty much standard so i may beed to upgrade.
Also where do i wire the orange head unit light wire to?
Any pics of a wiring diagram for the my97 would be a great help.
