Question

Strange query I know, but I'm after an amp for the car that basically replaces the standard head unit (so using the ISO connections for power and output to the speakers) but takes input from phono connections.

I know I could use a HU with an aux input, but I'm very tight on space - the HU location will be taken up by an LCD screen, and I think I'll have just enough space to mount an amp behind it (where the stock HU would be).

Any ideas / suggestions appreciated.

Last time I looked I did find a Sony amp that was designed to simply increase the output of a stock HU, had ISO connections, but was only about 20W (40-45W would be fine) and no phonos.

In that space, you would have a very big problem with heat, i.e. getting rid of it. Class AB power amps are ~65% efficient, best case. So it you have a 40WPC amp (80W total), it has to get rid of ~40W of heat at full output. Stick a 40W light bulb in that kind of space and see how hot it gets. You will need to ensure good air-flow, and probably bodge a fan in there too.

That's the one I found last time, ( some more info ) similar to what I'm after, as I dare say it'll be possible to wire the 2 channel input into the ISO block?

Does anyone have a diagram that explains what each ISO wire is for?

I'm hoping heat wont be an issue as this will just be replacing the head unit (4x50) so should (I would have thought) be producing less heat. I don't have loud music in the car so whatever amp is used will not be run at its max (just prefered having 45w at 1/3 volume than 20W at 3/4). The m'board will be providing the volume control (so some amplification at its end before it gets to the amp).

I think you'll find that they've done it for you with the supplied wiring harness.

A Google search on ISO will yield some pinouts. What exactly are you looking for.

Feel free to ping me for a price. We deal with a large Sony distributor.

Cool

Thanks Lee,

I have a PC with a 3.5mm jack output socket, in the house I have been using a 3.5mm to 2 phono connection to hook it up to the home cinema amplifier for output. I want to replicate this in the car, so am looking for a low powered amplifier with a simple way of taking in the signal from a head phone socket and putting it out to the car speakers.

If the Sony one above supports such an input on its wiring harness then it would be ideal, especially as there is one on ebay with a current highest bid of a quid If it doesn't then I'd need to find out what pins relate to left and right channel inputs and hack those cables apart and connect them up to the output from the motherboard.
