I'd like to upgrade the speakers in my classic wagon (old style interior)for some better units. I don't want to alter anything in the car, no spacers, no cutting panels etc.

Can anyone recommend some direct replacements for use with a mid-range Sony CD/MP3 head unit? I just want something that can take the output of the head unit without distorting at modest volumes.

5 1/4" Infinity seem popular on here as a direct replacement.

Personally though, if you're going to the trouble and expense I'd get something decent for marginally more money & hassle.

Using spacers gives more options and is easily returned to std.

I can spend whatever it takes really- mainly I don't want to mess around with spacers etc.

How about something like these

You might want to search for more info on whether they'd drop straight in (location of bolt holes). As far as I can see this kind of option would be easiest/suit your requirements. I do reckon that an amp would really bring out the full potential of these speakers. If you're 110% sure this isn't on your list of poss future upgrades, then something a little less sophisticated, maybe. These will be a good upgrade if you don't want any more than a decent replacement of the std speakers.

Do any holes need drilling in the doors?

Thumbs up

That's great- I'll look at both options seriously and even cosider the amp.

Well worth going for an amp for the improvement in sound quality. Relying on the head unit to do the job of an amp is being hopefull, to say the least.

Best thing though is to get down to a local meet where you can actually compare different options. Until you do this you're really just guessing at what you want/need.

Let us know how you get on.

I've just used Corsa spacers for my Focals. The bottom two holes marry up ok but I had to drill a new hole for the top one. I had to pack out the spacer a bit in places so as to get a perfectly sealed fixing and enough clearence between the magnet and the window.
I also had to put spacers on the door so that the door card cleared the front of the speaker.
It wasn't a particularly difficult job but does take some thought.
