MY03 Speaker Upgrade - Have You Done It?
#1
Has anyone sucessfully upgraded the front and rear door speakers in an MY03 WRX 4-door? If so, would you be kind enough to share with me:
Which speakers you used?
What extra bits and pieces you used to get them to fit?
Where I might buy all the required bits?
Thanks in advance.

Yes.
CDTAudio HD62DTs. Needed custom door builds from Maximum Impact in Leeds.
Admittedly, this probably ain't what you wanted to see
People have been successful with spacers and a variety of speakers. Hopefully they'll list exactly what they used here. And I can FAQ it, to coin a phrase

Chiark,
Hmmm. Yes. Thanks. Actually, I took a look at your website and saw the stuff about the custom door build, which was rather more involved than I was hoping for (nice site though). I just want some speakers that aren't cr@p!
I also believe (from various other posts) that the space for the speakers in the MY03 doors is slightly different to the MY02, so speakers that fit MY02 may not neccessarily fit MY03.

I'd like some info too if anybody's done both a MY02 and MY03 of any differences in depth. I've just ordered my MY03 and was intending to put the same Infinity's (6000CS) as I had in the MY02.
Personally, I can't see how they could be different though!

Just fitted 6000cs's to front doors, used 18mm MDF (could have got away with 12mm, but had 18mm lying about).
6000cs's definately will not fit in rear doors without cutting the panel (wouldn't recommend doing this as you would need to cut out a spot weld and consequently need to do a bit of welding).
5" speakers look like they would fit.

I thought the doors were the same for the 03? I fitted a pair of 6.5" Phoenix Gold components that I took out of another car and used 18mm MDF spacers, because they are quite deep. That was no problem.
My local car hi fi shop stocks pre cut mdf spacers for a fiver.

forgot to say that it is a 02 saloon. I also dynamatted around the speaker aperture and behind the magnet on the outer door skin.
For some rear fill I replaced the original rear door speakers with some kenwood 4" speakers which were a direct replacement; no spacers required.
Then you need to junk the headunit as it's rubbish...

I used 12mm MDF at the front and found that with good bass tracks the speakers were hitting the door card. For the next fitting I will angle the MDF in at the top.
I'd have thought you would have the same issue to a greater degree with 18mm MDF!

Chiark - I'll double check later - but I'm pretty sure its 6's throughout - upgrade from the 5's we had in our MY00 (its being installed by an ICE company we with work with so I'll check with them)
Also had our Alpine LCD screen in now - looks nice

Thanks, will do a search and, yes, I am that lazy, that's why I didn't do a search in the first place ;-)
P.S. How do you make the smiley things work? When I click 'Smilies Enable' I get a 'Page not Found'.

I dropped into Halfords the other day, they said that 17cm would fit the rear doors and require one of their "fitting kits" which they would need to order.
Like a silly bugger, I forgot to ask how much the kits were.
What sort of price do you have to pay for a pair of the infinitys (6000CS?) and do they give out much Bass? (Will any 17cm speakers give out much bass or do I have to get a sub???)

I paid £105 for CS6000's a couple of months ago. Shop online and you may get them for £80.
Used the Corsa spacers but I could have done with them being a little shallower as they're much deeper than 18mm and I think they're pushing the trim out a little. Definitely suggest you buy sound deadening; only £30 for two large rolls and you may as well do it at the same time.
Rears are 130mm Blaupunkt Velocity VRC. Can barely hear them unless I set the fronts to almost zero fader - not ideal.
Also, whole system lacks bass but can't be arsed to fit a bass box. Anyone fitted a sub to the rear parcel shelf - any hints (WRX 03)?
Dennon headunit that plays WMA / MP3 - best upgrade of the lot; 15 albums per CD.

I have two JL 8" subs fitted in a custom made box which fits against the back of the rear seats. It is only 130mm deep so take very little space, sound is good.
The parcel shelf metal panel is extermley irregula in shape.
This made fiitng directly to the shelf impractical, due to both the shape and depth of the enclosure.

I've managed to install Infinity 605cs in the rear parcel shelf of my 02 Saloon, as I wanted more bass than you could get out of doors, but without going to a boot build. Run off a small phoenix gold Q150.4, gives decent, solid and tight bass, well in excess of door builds only, even if not as good as a nice sub set up would achieve.
