I just got a Scooby from Japan 3 days ago (STI), and need a bit of advice on the stereo etc.
Basically, at the moment, it has an 'Addzest' Head unit installed. It seems all that is missing is the CD changer, but as with all imports, the radio only has a limited frequency and I can only pick up Radio 2 (!!!).
I have a few questions -
Is the connections/leads similar to the UK CD changers? I could maybe go buy a new changer (i.e. a Sony one).
Has anyone ever heard of 'Addzest' Head units? and are Addzest changers availble?
Would it be easier, if I just take out this head unit and install a new head unit/changer altogether?
Cheers

Addzest is what they call Clarion headunits in Japan. Just like Pioneer headunits are called Carrozerria. You may find that a Clariom changer may work, but you would need to either contact Clarion Technical or a Clarion dealer (who would probably try to sell you a Euro spec headunit and changer)

You will need to get a band expander as well, they are only about £15 and will allow your Addzest to pick up all the UK radio stations.

But the band expanders -or so I am told- do not display the correct UK frequencies or station name?
Correct me if I am wrong as I too could be in the same market in 7 weeks "-when the boat comes in!"

All the band expander will do is compress the radio freq into what the jap radio can see.
The jap radios do not have rds so they will not show the station names, the frequency will not display correctly but it does work

I got my WRX jap import just over a week ago. It's got the double-DIN stereo/cassette and CD AddZest units. The CD player skips a bit and I can only get Radio 2 as well but, apart from that, it's a pretty impressive setup for an OEM install. Having said that, I'm chucking it all out. Go down to Halfords with £199 and you can pick up a 4x50w Pioneer 3500-something-or-other CD head unit that plays MP3s - you don't even need a CD multi-changer these days.

Btw, I don't know if it's still the case but, a few years ago, Sony CD multi-changers had a connection on them that would only work with Sony head units.
And another P.S.....My OEM speakers sound surprisingly good for a 1996 car (they've been looked after) but note that they're rated at only 30watts so any new head unit these days will need to be matched with uprated speakers .... or you'll blow them pretty quick if they're the same as mine.
