Question

Been looking on EBay for a 4-channel amp and have seen a few Boschmann models going at reasonable prices. In particular, the PCH-4480 seems to be just what I'm after: 2x90W + 2x60W RMS into 4 ohms.

Anybody on here ever used a Boschmann before ? Are they any good ? Or are they cheap tatt and best avoided ?

Boschmann amps are from the budget end of amps - such as SPLX, Pro-plus, ultimate, etc. Some people are happy with that - I wouldnt recommend them, but you might find them OK. Depends on how much they cost, I suppose, and what you expect from them.

Atche,

I'm not looking for excessive sound levels, just good clean sound reproduction with some decent bass definition.

Which makes would you personally recommend ?

I know what you mean Luke, but there is always a risk with second hand amps - Its impossible to know what kind of abuse they have had until its installed, and if an idiot had it before, cooking the internals without giving it enough air to cool it, some of the internal components can start to break down...

My recommendations would be:JL, Phoenix Gold, Genesis...but for good value for money, Alpine. Due to limited and tightly controlled distribution outlets, the more specialist amps tend to be expensive.

Makes to avoid - Sony, Pro-Plus, SPLX...

No I am going to stand up for Pro plus!!! they can make some good amps for the money. Also they last. Trouble is they were priced for the "max Krap" lot so will have all the gains /EQ's etc turned up full.

But the chances of a good class amp been treated in this way is lower.....

Ask the seller about the rest of the system used..

If a seller told me that the amp lets say.. "Genesis" that he was selling was used with "CD" speakers and a Nakamichi head unit etc I would be thinking...."This is a Audio guy who will have set it up nice..."

Also check the gain control... is they are all manky (As they tend to be real soft plastic) then someones been messing around big time.

Ask here for a nice amp. Tell what spec you want and go with the flow!!! Lots of us have spare amps that could be for sale.

"Punch 40" series 1 boxed and mint. £90.00 if you want???

I've been looking on EBay for the last couple of days and there are lots of Boschmanns and SPLX's for sale, which it seems are probably best avoided. Haven't seen a suitable Phoenix Gold or Alpine yet

I'm looking for a 4-channel amp capable of something in the region of 4x75W RMS into 4 ohms. If anyone on here has something suitable that could be for sale then let me know...

What's the spec on the Punch 40 then ?

No By JL I mean JL, not JBL. JBL amps can be okay, but they tend to be the higher priced ones, Infinty amps (Infinty and JBL are owned by the same company - Harman - )are best avoided as well - their new reference range arent very good at all, produces noise, unlike their old kappa amps they used to do..
