I've got a template for some MY96/97 custom speaker mounts as a word file if you're interested.

PS. You're not too far from me - I live just across the Solent!

Hi Everybody

Can someone recommend some good direct replacement (Should there be such a thing!?) front door speakers for MY97 Impreza Turbo 2000 AWD Wagon.

I am trying, as hard as it is, to keep the car standard for now but those front speakers....I'm sure they could have done better than that!?

Thanks for any help.

Brett

I thought that this question would already have been asked.
Sorry, I've just realised that you can search the forums!
I hope this isn't moved to the 'Muppet' forum !

Any suggestions would still be appreciated though.

Cheers

The standard speakers aren't very good, are they!!

There's no "best" answer to the question though - the best bet is to audition a few speakers in your price range and go from there.

Infinity and Focal seem to be rated highly here.

I put some Kenwood P703 (I think!) component speakers in mine, and have been very happy with them. Component speakers do require more messing with to get them to fit - such as drilling the little triangles on the mirrors so you can mount the tweeters. (I got a spare set if I ever need to go back to standard.) - however, the result is a better sound stage.

Oh, and if you're using the standard stereo, think carefully about replacing it as well, as it's apparently not very good either.

dnb,

would have thought that the tweeters are in totally the wrong place for a decent sound stage.
Far too far away from the mid range driver, ideally they should be exactly the same distance from the driver's ear unless you are amping them seperately and using an rta to adjust the timing.

The path length differences aren't that bad... - I grant you it's not an accoustically perfect solution, but then you get compromise in every design. For the driver the left hand path is almost exactly right, and the right hand unfortunatly not as good.
(This is obviously reversed for the passenger.)

I tried the tweeters in a couple of more accousticly ideal places, I thought they looked silly, would probably have got in the way, been a swine to fit or been damaged.... I figured that since I could hardly hear the difference between the different mounting positions anyway, it didn't really make too much difference to me. (I know I don't have the best ears!) Wherever I put the new speakers, they were vastly better than the old.

As you say, some form of timing adjustment is a way of proceeding - if I could hear the same sort of improvement as fitting these, I might. However, driving improvement mods are the next thing on the list now.

Sorry for the rambling - just trying to put down in words some of the thoughts behind doing it the way I did! Perhaps I worded the 1st post wrong about the sound stage... All I meant was that my current setup has a better stage (by quite a margin) than the std setup with the seemingly very low bandwidth speakers! (And you don't need to crawl on the floor to find it. )

I've not made any permanant changes to the car, so if I think of a better solution I can impelement it quite easily. I have to replace something inside the doors, so the cards have to come off soon. Where would you suggest mounting the tweeters?

[added]
I measured the path difference last night to check, and on the driver's side this equates to less than 1 ms based on 320 m/s for the speed of sound. (I obviously have low resolution ears if I can't hear this sort of time difference )

Hi everybody

Thanks a lot for all your help.
I take on board that the standard stereo is not very good. I'm sure this will get upgraded at some time too. But for now it would just be nice to replace the speakers so I don't wince when they try and make some noise!

DNB: that would be great if I could get your template for custom mount speakers. I am going to need all the help that I can get. Could you email it to me? Where about over the Solent are you?Cheers.
