I recently fitted a Rockford Fosgate Punch 55 amp and a 12" JBL sub in a ported box, in my m3 evo saloon.

The problem is, that the bass does not travel well into the passenger compartment- this is due to the boot being quite well sealed up, and the bass not travelling.....so my question is how exactly is this problem combatted? Any suggestions?

I leave the rear armrest down, but to be honest it doesn;t make any difference cos its all metal behind it....

Not to sure about the M3 but my old 5 series had a ski hatch which I removed, I then fired a free air (not boxed) 10" sub into the open space behind the armrest, worked a treat.

Unfortunately you're all wrong - the E36 (sorry, I'm assuming it's an E36) is an absolute bugger to get any bass into. There's just something about the size & shape of the boot that turns it into a black hole for bass.

Empirical evidence is that free-air subs work best. Try posting on talkaudio.co.uk as there's several people on there with E36s (including me). And *please* listen to what people say, if you just put another bigger/more powerful/more expensive sub in a box in your boot you will only be disappointed !!

FWIW, I found a pair of JL 10IB4s (free air) with 75 watts each to be way better than a pair of JL 12W3s boxed with 250 watts each. Go figure !

Steve.

Cheers for that.....so when you say 'free air'...I take it you mean mounting the subs underneath the shelf?

And will taking the rear speakers out make any difference?(btw it is an e36)...

Free air means "not boxed". You give 'em what is known as an "infinite baffle", meaning all that the subs really want is to have the front airspace separated from tbe back.

Talkaudio.co.uk is a fantastic resource.
