Question

Picked up my MY98 Sport last night - was smiling all the way home

The only downer is that the rear speakers are blown. Anyone know what size they are, (to save me going out in the rain to look)?
Wanna replace em tomorrow...

Hi mate,

Just took mine out yesterday, so i can tell you that they are 6 1/4" (or 158mm if you prefer) to the very outer edge.

They fit into a blanking plate, so the acutal hole in the rear shelf is bigger.

I think that you can fit "some" 6*9's (the infinity one's that i had wouldnt, without modification)

I didnt want to modify speakers/car, so i bought some 6" direct replacements.

Hope this helps,

Nick.

Question

How easy were they to get out? Just been talking to a chappie in a car audio shop who said they're a bugger to get out as they're bonded in?

They're not bonded in, just screwed, but I had to remove the parcel shelf to change mine - that involves taking the back seat out and quite a bit of trim.

Someone reckons they removed the grilles just by pulling - might be worth a go first? YMMV.

Cheers,
Nick.

If you just pull the grills off, you'll either break them, or never get them back on again properly anyway.

I'm afraid, it's a back seat and all the trim off job, to get the shelf out.

It's an easy job really - just a bit time consuming - i've just finished this morning. I replaced mine with a set of 6" Kicker speakers - sound much better - more punchy

Dont be afraid to really pull at the rear quarter panels - there's about 8 clips that hold them in!

I used Chiark's website for guidance ( Thanks )

Nick.

Question

Ah, so if I didn't want to fit the standard Subaru grills back on, and the replacement grills are top-mounted, then I could just pop the Subaru ones off from the top and unscrew the speakers?

I still reckon you could even break the shelf trying to pull them off - it's only thin hardboard.

I'm with Chiark on this one - take the seats out.

Thumbs up

Well, I've fitted them.

Tried the seat-out route first, but couldn't work out how to get the back of the back seat out? Got the base out ok, and removed the 3 bolts, but couldn't seem to release the top?

So gave up on that idea and put the seat back in. I figured as I'm losing the Subaru grills anyway it doesn't matter if they get broken.
Had to drill 3 holes in the plastic surrounds that hold the grills of the new speakers, to match the existing holes, but they don't show from the outside.
So now have a nice pair of Infinity 5002i's in the back of my car. Took a lot of piddling around to do it, but sounds a hell of a lot better
